Recientemente el sur de. A blog about moving south. Newly Southern. Monday, 13 August 2012. I would have been, I don’t know. Eight. A little girl. Shivering and bored under a man’s raincoat. A man’s beanie swallowing my head, a man’s gloves making my hands monstrous and comic. Sitting under the unreliable shelter of what was once probably a grandstand, but the grand was long gone, and what was left was barely standing. He was out there. That’s the memory. That’s the one I have of him....Nick sat up strai...

Recientemente el sur de. A blog about moving south. Newly Southern. Tuesday, 17 July 2012. The duck was by the road. A smile on his bill. The cat was losing shape. Her face was fuzzy. Recientemente el sur de. A blog about moving south. Newly Southern. Thursday, 24 May 2012. Jayboy laughs, Ned drops in. Photo by the wonderful Ralph. A person watching may have watched the bearded one scamper off, scratch a patch into the leaf litter beneath a wind-bent tree and snap a quick poo. Anybody who’d cared to would have witnessed a lump of water rise as it approached the bearded man. They’d have seen him spin toward the beach, digging deep with both arms, tearing great gouts of ...They’d ...

Recientemente el sur de. A blog about moving south. Newly Southern. Saturday, 28 July 2012. But there was no phone, and as far as I could see, no wife. On closer inspection his clothes were worn, a little stale. One shoe lacked a lace, and the sole of the other flapped like a lip. He turned to face me. There was no earpiece, just a pearl of coffee flavoured milk on his chin and the eyes of the permanently baffled. Tuesday, 17 July 2012. Hear them. Swirling, jagged. Urgency. Subtlety. Bomb...I have been l...

Recientemente el sur de. A blog about moving south. Newly Southern. Wednesday, 6 June 2012. Shattered as they hit. Is lip was still dribbling blood. He could feel the hot pulse growing, like the shame and anger inside him, as his eye swelled shut. The other passengers on the platform kept well clear of him, as if there was danger somewhere in a beaten man, as if there was something in him they could catch. The girl pulled something from her bag and began to play with it. It was a sphere of transperen...

Recientemente el sur de. A blog about moving south. Newly Southern. Wednesday, 23 May 2012. I don’t know who he was. I can’t even picture his face anymore. I think he was on the way to old then, definitely older than me. I am pretty sure Jay knew him, or at least knows a lot more about him than me. But Jay surfed out at the Hole a lot more than I ever did. Photo of George Greenough in 1985 by Dan Gross. Used without permission, but with respect and gratitude. We all thought he was a mad bugger, some weir...

Recientemente el sur de. A blog about moving south. Newly Southern. Friday, 8 June 2012. On the way to the first job of the evening he saw a child swinging between its parents. One small hand in one of each of theirs, the little boy walked with uncertain steps and swinging legs. His parents kept him from falling, and his hair flashed in the afternoon sunlight. The old man made sure his wife was comfortable and warm. Then he set the oars in their locks and pulled away from the yacht, watching it grow ...

Recientemente el sur de. A blog about moving south. Newly Southern. Monday, 23 April 2012. Drifting north to check things out again. Back North over the weekend. Busy times - loading our worldly goods onto a truck to bring down to Number 13 - the new HQ of the Newly Southerners; watching my clever, beautiful lady graduate from her Law degree; then heading south to the verdant bucolic wonder of Kangaroo Valley to be at the wedding of two of my best friends. Thursday, 5 April 2012. I was not magnificent.
