The Pink Milk Crate

The Pink Milk Crate. Saturday, April 21, 2012. The Secrets of Baking. If this looks familiar, this post is for you. These volumes are passed down generation to generation and there is something comforting about making a recipe and seeing your grandmother’s (or, in my case, grandfather's) or mother’s handwriting in the margins, telling you to add more wine or cook it a few minutes longer than the recipe calls for. We've all been here at some point. After 40 minutes in the oven they still hadn't set. S...

The Pink Milk Crate: December 2011

http://thepinkmilkcrate.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

The Pink Milk Crate. Monday, December 19, 2011. Generally avoid projects that require me to sew a lot. This is primarily due to my mother’s crotchety old sewing machine, which we refer to as “the devil machine.” Every few inches the thread bunches and tangles and is a general pain in the butt. Every so often, though, I am willing to make an exception. A few weeks ago my mom and I were doing some Christmas shopping and saw a Christmas pillow at Pottery Barn we both fell in love with:.

The Pink Milk Crate: February 2012

http://thepinkmilkcrate.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

The Pink Milk Crate. Monday, February 27, 2012. To paraphrase Mark Twain, the rumors of my blogging death have been greatly exaggerated. I am rousing myself out of the deep funk created by the loss of Pilar and have begun, slowly, to do some nesting. To begin with, I nixed the idea of making 8 thin layers. I’m taking baby steps here, not launching into a sprint. Besides, I like my cake-to-frosting ratio to favor cake. As such, I cut the recipe in half and made 2, thicker layers. 2 1/2 cups unsweetened sh...

The Pink Milk Crate: May 2011

http://thepinkmilkcrate.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

The Pink Milk Crate. Sunday, May 22, 2011. If These Walls Could Talk. Let’s talk a little more about wall decor. It can be the single easiest way to express yourself as a young nester. Furniture may be hand-me-down from family or friends or chosen for the price rather than the style, and wall colors may be unalterable per the terms of one’s lease. However, the things we put on our walls are wholly up to us and say a lot about who we are. Can't wait to make a frame for this little guy! Also, cleaning out ...

Book Brouhaha: Creative People Say No?

http://bookbrouhaha.blogspot.com/2015/04/creative-people-say-no.html

A blog by an independent author with a particular interest in short stories. Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Creative People Say No? I was reading this article by Business Insider here. That suggests that successful creative people all share the ability/trait to say "no." In other words, they don't allow for others to monopolize their time. It was interesting because the thought never occurred to me yet saying "no" is such a huge part of how I operate from day to day if I want to get some writing done. Check o...

Book Brouhaha: Pacing and Consistency

http://bookbrouhaha.blogspot.com/2015/03/pacing-and-consistency.html

A blog by an independent author with a particular interest in short stories. Wednesday, March 4, 2015. At the beginning of this year my life got busier. It's all good things, nothing bad. And the extra busyness is temporary (I hope). But, needless to say, it has put a cramp in my writing output. I was forced to take a step back. I love writing but it's not my primary source of income. And I realized that the frustration I felt was sucking all the enjoyment I gleaned from the process. It wasn't worth it!

A blog by an independent author with a particular interest in short stories. Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Advice from Siblings – A Review. Flash fiction, by its very nature, cuts to the chase, omitting the breadth in favor of depth. Jennifer Vandenberg reaffirms in Advice from Siblings that the richness of the tale need not depend upon anything as pedestrian as word count. 8220;Advice from Siblings” was the first place story in SFWG’s 2014 Flash Fiction Contest. http://bookbrouhaha.blogspot.com/2015/05/pacing-and-consistency-continued.html

A blog by an independent author with a particular interest in short stories. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Pacing and Consistency Continued. A few months ago I wrote about how my writing schedule had to change for 2015. I felt the need to follow up now that some time has passed. So far I've remained extremely consistent with sitting down to write each weekday. I still haven't been able to work myself back up to a strict word count but I don't see this as a sign of losing steam with my writing. Check out all o...

Book Brouhaha: Dean Wesley Smith on Making a Living With Short Stories

A blog by an independent author with a particular interest in short stories. Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Dean Wesley Smith on Making a Living With Short Stories. For those of you that missed the bandwagon, Dean Wesley Smith wrote a blog post that spelled out the math behind making a living with short stories. It's an interesting post. Well worth the read. It's also the same thing I said six months ago. But it's always nice to know others support your theory =). Business model. Same goes for Joe Konrath&...

Book Brouhaha: May 2015

http://bookbrouhaha.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

A blog by an independent author with a particular interest in short stories. Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Review of "The Memory Man," a short story by Helen Smith. I can't help but like Smith's style. Even after ruthlessly throwing her characters into a grim situation the tone of the story always remains cheeky. This allowed me to instantly connect with the characters and feel genuinely interested in their fates in a comparatively short space of time. I would say that, as a whole, I liked The Memory Man.

Book Brouhaha: Review of "Argentina," a single story from a collection by Guy J. Jackson

http://bookbrouhaha.blogspot.com/2015/03/review-of-argentina-single-story-from.html

A blog by an independent author with a particular interest in short stories. Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Review of "Argentina," a single story from a collection by Guy J. Jackson. One word came to mind as I read "Argentina": rambling. The entire story consists of a protagonist lamenting over the general ban the world has placed on smoking with a small side order of remorse about his misspent twenties. Reviewed by Alain Gomez.
