The Problem With Life. Just another WordPress.com site. The Market, the State and the Credit Crunch. Cut the Cuts, George →. To God or Not to God. September 30, 2010. I recently read an interesting letter in The Guardian. A reader wrote in taking issue with a review of Stephen Hawking’s new book, in which he disavows the existence of God, seemingly on the basis that science can explain everything without the need for God. There is no decisive way of disproving the existence of God, He is set up so as to ...

The Problem With Life. Just another WordPress.com site. To God or Not to God. Cut the Cuts, George. October 6, 2010. This man wants to take your job away. I know, I’ve covered the cuts before. But a couple of things I read over the weekend really hammered home to me the sheer economic wrong-headedness of the scale and speed of the cuts that are going to happen come October 20th. The first very simple point was made in a review of Will Hutton’s new book. The Big Society is a vague, ephemeral concept invol...

The Problem With Life. Just another WordPress.com site. The Current State of Alzheimer’s Research. To God or Not to God →. The Market, the State and the Credit Crunch. September 8, 2010. In a free market, the state should act as a counterbalance to the market, to regulate its worst excesses and provide the essential services from which profit cannot be gained, or which would be diluted or corrupted by the pursuit of profit: health, education, justice and defence. The free market is undoubtedly the best e...

The Problem With Life. Just another WordPress.com site. Newer posts →. What Thatcher Couldn’t Do. July 17, 2010. Thatcher is proud of you. This week has been a week full of policy announcements from the Tory government. The dismantling of the FSA in return for cash from big food companies was the first blow, although as Deborah Orr eloquently put it. Similarly, by offering the NHS the opportunity to take on private patients and to offer patients ‘top-up’ packages on top of their basic care is...Similarly...

The problem with grumbling. 18th June, 2014. By The Problem With Life. God is an Englishman. When it comes to criticising others, the British are right pains in the ass. Mustn’t grumble that seems to be the old adage of Britons when confronted by life’s difficulties, whether that’s poor service, overbearing officialdom or that most British of inventions the never ending queue. However this reticence in pointing out deficiencies doesn’t seem to apply when our eyes are cast beyond the channel. The worst th...
