This estate we're in: 'Emergency Use Only?' On food banks, shame, and broken systems
http://thisestate.blogspot.com/2014/12/emergency-use-only-on-food-banks-shame.html
This estate we're in. Reflections from a parish priest, dad and PhD student, living on an urban 'outer estate' in the West Midlands, on day-to-day life, faith, 'community', politics. and whatever else happens to turn up! Love your neighbour - love your enemy. Thursday, 4 December 2014. On food banks, shame, and broken systems. I’m angry. I’m also tired, frustrated, and have moments of despair, but most especially, I’m angry. That those acute crises could be prompted by a sudden loss of earnings (e.g&...

Love your neighbour - love your enemy. Friday, 23 May 2014. Voting and not-voting, for 5-year-olds. I came back from the Polling Station yesterday evening to be interrogated by my bright, questioning 5-year-old son, who was in the middle of bathtime. "Daddy, who did you vote for? I expla...

Love your neighbour - love your enemy. Sunday, 29 June 2014. OccupyWestminster and Common Worship. A different, resistant, even revolutionary kind of politics in its worship. And then I saw photos yesterday of Westminster Abbey. When pressed, with concrete examples of liturgy's apparent ...

Getting Real: March 2013
http://blog-gettingreal.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, 10 March 2013. What's wrong with this picture? Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 8220;When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 8220;Father”, the older son said. “My brother is outside, at the gate! Getting Real: Depression
http://blog-gettingreal.blogspot.com/2013/09/depression.html
Saturday, 7 September 2013. I've been trying to do more regular postings for a while, but, try as I might, no subjects seemed to have come to mind: at least, no subjects about which I feel I have anything useful to say. Clearly nothing else is going to happen until I get this one out of the way. So here goes. Why don't I want to talk about it here? I know that be posting on the Internet, I am making my comments available, in principle, to everyone, from close friends to prospective employers. And, be...

Getting Real: December 2012
http://blog-gettingreal.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Sunday, 2 December 2012. So my approach to World Aids Day has to be different. While I share in the concerns expressed on intellectual and political levels, and while I recall and pray for those of my friends who live, now, with HIV, I have to find another story to earth the day in my own heart. It so happened that towards the end of my time in this neighbourhood this large church experienced something called ‘The Toronto Blessing’. If you are a fellow evangelical: do you remember that? I made any sudden...

Getting Real: November 2012
http://blog-gettingreal.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Friday, 16 November 2012. Cyril' – A Postscript. Cyril' – A Postscript. It turns out things weren’t quite as bleak as I thought they were. I hadn’t missed the funeral; it had just taken a while to arrange. And I was able to get time off work to attend it, and the committal. There were more people there than I had expected: a gathering of, mainly, neighbours and nurses and social workers. Mr Mohammed was one of the pall-bearers. There were no relatives. I the Lord of wind and flame,. My hand will save.
