We are what we eat and what we do. Preparing for Spring . February 4, 2014. April 7, 2014. Although it has not been a cold winter it has been wet and windy above normal. Usually by now we would have started to prepare the ground ready for planting at the allotments , but not this year . We are way behind and it is really disheartening ,but as you know the growing seasons have a way of catching up in the end . The ground is water logged and the only thing I reckon we should be growing is rice! Put them in...

We are what we eat and what we do. My broody hen 11 days on. May 22, 2014. October 19, 2014. It has been a week since I reported on my lovely broody chicken Shadow and although there is a plan in progress there has only been a slight improvement. What does seem to be the opinion from several chicken owners is that Speckledy chickens go broody a lot , by that I mean could be several times a year. .Why didn’t I know this? The latest picture of my broody girl Shadow. My broody hen day four . Fill in your de...

Strawberry time. | Tastes of life

We are what we eat and what we do. June 20, 2014. It is strawberry time again and you can’t beat freshly picked strawberries from the garden or allotment plot . Below are a few ideas to use them if they have managed to get home . Easy strawberry ice cream. 600g strawberries (plus 50g extra for chunks if you want them). The proportions are equal measures of fruit to cream and 1/3 the weight in sugar so adapt it to suit the amount of strawberries you have). Mix the strawberry puree, cream and sugar together.

We are what we eat and what we do. Poorly Chicken Moulting . February 23, 2014. April 7, 2014. Having lost two chickens in the last couple of months for different reasons when Bonnie a couple of weeks ago started to feel sorry for herself I started to get concerned as I thought it was too much of a coincidence .What had I been doing wrong? Was it the hygiene? Did they have enough space? The reason I am writing this is if your chicken is poorly get advice as 3 years ago with out knowing a lot about chicke...

Where the Wild Bergamot Blooms. Slowing Down Time, Keeping My Mountain Heritage Alive. Laquo; Eyes Wide Shut… Take Your Baby. Death and Dignity and the Oscars. July 10, 2015 by Tipton. My first chicks died on me…or eggs. In the hatching world they’re called Quitters. As if this is a path they chose. I felt what can only be described as a sense of loss. Truly. Was it something I did? I lost three. I expected to lose some out of my 10. The books say not to expect a 100% hatch rate. Ho-hum. You are commenti...
