The Real Wine Blog. Real Wine for Real People. December 12, 2010. Broke out a bottle of 2000 Chateau Gloria this week and enjoyed it along with one of Pam’s great stews. The wine is an excellent example of St. Julien from Bordeaux and wonderfully smooth and velvety. I have about 10 bottles of this wine left so there’s lots more to enjoy over the years. Port for Christmas | The Real Wine Blog
https://therealwineblog.wordpress.com/2010/12/12/port-for-christmas
The Real Wine Blog. Real Wine for Real People. December 12, 2010. In our house, an open bottle of vintage port has been a Christmas tradition since the mid 1980s. And this year is no exception. Pam was out last night, singing as part of the Portsmouth based choral group, ConTutti, and after spending over a half an hour trying to find a parking spot somewhere in downtown Portsmouth so that I could go to the annual ConTutti Christmas concert, I gave up and headed home. First, Jon’s a distant cousin of Allie Smith, wife of my favorite east coast wine-maker, Brian Smith of Oyster River Wine Growers. Jon can start by doing a little research on the local vineyards, for example by checking out the Columbia River Valley Wineries here. Among the numerous vineyards to be found there, the region is home to Columbia Crest. One thing that...

Snowy Cabin Dispatches: November 2010
http://snowycabindispatches.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Once consequence of wind-littered snow- not the best for melting. It's howling here at the cabin- a cruel reentry into Alaska and winter. We got back from vacation Friday, but spent a few days in the big city. We visited friends, and went on a massive Costco run, which included- among many many other things- my insistence that we buy three kinds of butter. Hey, it's almost Christmas, right? Snowy Cabin Dispatches: March 2011
http://snowycabindispatches.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 27, 2011. Heading up the Tsaina River. Last Sunday was the first day of spring. To cap off our weekend of x-country skiing, we made our way up the Tsaina River, about 15 miles away. It was a stunning day, one that required multiple applications of spf-50 sunblock. Tory takes the lead toward the unknown. We started going uphill pretty quickly. It wasn't so steep that we had trouble going up on our x-country skis, but we gained a couple hundred feet of elevation over a half mile or so. We wen...

Saturday, January 22, 2011. Home again and hungry. My sweetheart is an excellent cook. He is also a little more experimental than I am. I stick to fairly concrete flavor palates, whereas he'll mix and play around. Sesame oil and oregano? Sometimes, this leads to. some less than successful dishes. But over the years, the experimentation has lead to some winners. They're fabulous year round, but are especially good in the winter when you're trying to get through a freezer full of frozen fish. I watched as the sun went down. It seemed to hover over the cliffs of the Valley of the Kings forever, then suddenly plunge into the underworld, just as the ancient peoples intuited and dreamed.
