Where the heck did we come from, anyway? Slave Name Roll Project: A Negro Woman Named Rose. March 7, 2015. Middot; by Kelly. I’ve done some more digging in William Miles Bembry’s estate file. And learned the following:. A woman named Rose. I have no idea why Rose would have been living elsewhere. Perhaps she had been “hired out,” a common practice at the time. She may have had some particular skill, such as cooking or dressmaking that made her valuable. And that all I know of the story of Rose. One thoug...

Where the heck did we come from, anyway? Miles Bembry Part II: 1800-1809. February 7, 2015. Middot; by Kelly. The 19th century starts off with yet another spelling of Bembry and a mystery. (Read part I of the story here.) Miles is found on the 1800 census of Bertie county. His name is transcribed as “Banbury” but in fact it looks like “Bembury” or “Bembery” to me. An Earlier Bembry? | Bembry Roots

Where the heck did we come from, anyway? March 17, 2015. Middot; by Kelly. I recently visited the Local History room at the Arlington County public library just to see what might be available there. The area of North Carolina in which Miles Bembry lived was originally the Albemarle District of Virginia. Many of the residents came from what now call Virginia to North Carolina. So, I checked the indexes of a few books about early colonial Virginia for any mention of a Bembry. With that exact spelling.
