History of the Region. History of the Region. History of the Region. Chajul and the Ixil. Climate: The majority of these villages lie in a temperate climate zone with elevations of 3,500 to 6,500 ft. Eighty to ninety percent of the land is mountainous with very little true farm land. Subsistence farming is the main source of income with coffee being the main cash crop.
