cross-cultural moments: May 2009
http://culturalmoments.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Transforming international living into personal and professional progress. May 30, 2009. I have been reading some theoretical work that links the brain (the physical organ) with the mind (the human consciousness that thinks, feels, acts and perceives) - the very exciting work being done in neuroscience that tells us how people learn and change. The reason we all resist change, even when we KNOW that the change is in our best interests, is that our brains work that way. Sounds like coaching to me! In Rome...

cross-cultural moments: January 2010
http://culturalmoments.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Transforming international living into personal and professional progress. January 30, 2010. I have been doing a few 1-2 day cross-cultural training programs for incoming managers and (accompanying spouses) to Italy.and I have run into a reverse cross-cultural moment. It has to do with lunch - how Italian. Then 12:30 rolled around and they accompanied me downstairs to release me, saying, " let's meet back at 1:20" and off they went. I was meant to eat lunch, ALONE. Ah yes, cultural differences. They ...

cross-cultural moments: July 2009
http://culturalmoments.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Transforming international living into personal and professional progress. July 30, 2009. I've had guests - all four sisters together in Rome for the first time! I'm the oldest, but it was the third who instigated the trip. Although she suffered brain damage at birth, she continues to grow and develop and regularly surprise us all. At her annual assesment meeting she put forward her next goal - to visit me in Italy with her sisters. So we made it happen. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

http://culturalmoments.blogspot.com/2009/10/cultural-awareness-in-workplace.html
Transforming international living into personal and professional progress. October 15, 2009. Cultural Awareness in the Workplace. A photo from yesterday's presentation at the US embassy in Rome - Survive to Thrive: Cultural Awareness in the Workplace. It was a mixed group of new arrivals, spouses, diplomats and embassy staff (even a few Italians) and everyone was quite engaged and surprised at how much they got out of the hour. Hope we can correspond later. October 23, 2009 at 1:13 AM. Sietar conference ...

cross-cultural moments: June 2009
http://culturalmoments.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Transforming international living into personal and professional progress. June 25, 2009. Our brain, our culture. I googled (is this an official verb yet? Self-directed neuroplasticity" today and ended up downloading a fascinating, enjoyable and easy to digest podcast interview on an Australian national radio podcast with a couple of leaders in the field: Jeff Schwartz and Norman Doidge. In this way, culture shock is really brain shock! All very cool stuff. Links to this post. June 18, 2009. A friend sen...

http://culturalmoments.blogspot.com/2010/02/ways-of-thinking.html
Transforming international living into personal and professional progress. February 16, 2010. I found this story on a forum and it is a wonderful example of differences in approaches to thinking things through and decision making processes. Wow this is so true. I have definitely seen this first-hand as well. So hard to describe it while youre in it though - kudos to the person who managed to do it. February 17, 2010 at 2:49 AM. Transforming international living into personal and professional progress. November 27, 2009. Another Thanksgiving came and went. You gotta love the ritual of it all - same turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, side dishes, pumpkin and apple pie all washed down with a glass of Novello. Our gratitude to their curiosity to prepare to perfection such an exotic dish! So, here is the post again. Enjoy. For Thanksgivings gone and those to come - shared with expat friends. cross-cultural moments: Expat persona
http://culturalmoments.blogspot.com/2009/12/expat-persona.html
Transforming international living into personal and professional progress. December 15, 2009. Today I would like to share a great blog post that talks about how we take on an "expat persona" while living abroad - even using a new name that better fits our "other" self. My expat persona name is Elizabeth, which is actually my first name, but not the name I had ever been called by friends and family back home. Comments to the blog post below include:. I like the idea that when you move to a new country and...
