Competitive but not combative: June 2015

Competitive but not combative. The science behind this is (to me) very interesting. Foot Strike Patterns in Tarahumara Runners Wearing Huarache Sandals vs. Conventional Shoes. Is a posting by Peter Larson on runblogger.com. His blog on all things running-technical. It picks up from the so-titled article by Daniel Lieberman in the Journal of Sport and Health Science. Competitive but not combative. Comme un Pétard Théorique. It would be unconscionable to hold a friend up to ridicule for writing about hoisting someone on her own petard. Especially as the friend is a best-selling author. Not the same author that I was pictured with at the ALCS do last week, on Facebook, though he is not a renowned grammarian. Used that way, it sounds as if a petard is a flagpole or similar device. In fact it is a bomb, and the word comes from from the Middle French. Péter, to break wind.

Competitive but not combative. Long-distance running ability may be signal of desirable male genes. Said Runner's World recently, which is of historical interest only to me - perhaps, in a small way, I demonstrate that the thesis is correct: at least I don't disprove it. The same source (reading it is a great substitute for running! In fact, for anyone looking for technical tips (as if this is the place for that, or I'm the person to ask! Posted by Peter Groves. Competitive but not combative. It should be summer by now, but there's a distinct lack of warmth. Chatting by instant message on Skype, I learnt from Ron that Israel was having a heatwave and the temperature was 40 degrees. I replied that we were also having a heatwave and the temperature was 20 degrees. But then it cooled down again. Next time we meet, I want to be able to tell him that I've just finished a 30K run . Competitive but not combative. Another year passes and once again Janathon. Comes around - encouraging me to run every day and blog about it. Well, it didn't look as if that was going to happen today, because I have had a problem which was quite likely a chest infection, ever since returning from India over two weeks ago and perhaps actually since before that. (But I do have a piece of paper from the Indian authorities declaring me free from ebola.). Posted by Peter Groves. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Competitive but not combative. Keeping the language pure. The French have always been pretty ruthless in their defence of their language, while we have cravenly accepted every incursion from America. When I first started studying Russian (and it has been an extremely slow start: after 35 years it is barely under way, though now I have adopted the inverse of the Putin. Posted by Peter Groves. Competitive but not combative: November 2014
http://petergroves.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Competitive but not combative. Remembrance Day/Grand Union Canal Half Marathon. It was never going to be the proverbial swift half, and it turned out to be slower than I planned, as I faded in the November heat (! In the last three miles (as the splits show), but to run a Half with so little preparation and with injuries to overcome is rather satisfying - almost as good as a PB. Almost! My calf injury didn't trouble me, and indeed the exercise seems to have loosened it up a bit (another underuse injury?
Competitive but not combative: February 2015

Competitive but not combative. The holiday begins today. With the Motor Law conference over for another year, I can relax - a bit. Most importantly I took advantage of an overnight stay in the area to get out early yesterday morning and run round St James's and part of Green Park, which always brings back happy memories of many lunchtime runs and the great friends with whom I did them. Skip to main content. Skip to primary sidebar. Skip to secondary sidebar. The rest is still unwritten. The North Face Endurance Challenge (NFEC)/San Francisco Trail Marathon last December 2011 was my most fantastic race to date. Photo by Margaret Gagnon. It was tough as hell, but when I finished it, I felt a huge sense of accomplishment. And I knew right there and then that I’d want to come back in twelve months and take on the challenge of doing the next distance up: the 50K (or 31 miles). Which is why ...

Thursday, June 18, 2015. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR LOOKING AFTER YOUR BACK. Low back pain is an extremely common complaint, not just with patients presenting to Physio Noosa but in the community as a whole. There are just a few jeepneys plying this route, same goes with cars and motorcycles, and best of all, practically no big trucks! This route is perfect for those in deep t...
