The Rural Girl

December 8, 2011. RADvent: Day 6 - Starting. Start simply. Feel the fear, invite it in, and start anyway. If you have to begin again, it doesn’t mean you failed. Starting over builds momentum for the big finish! I love starting projects. I do it regularly. It's just a toss up if I finish or not. Now, the bigger stuff, I don't enjoy starting so much. Yet, I can't seem to find the courage, time or ways to let go of my reasoning as to why it can't work. Back to the drawing board. Think simple. Starting is t...

The Rural Girl: October 2010

http://theruralgirl.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

October 11, 2010. More Me, Less Technology. And I’m milking autumn for all it’s worth. Soaking up every moment I can of this glow that strictly belongs to autumn. I love something about all of the other seasons, but I think autumn wins out with her mellowness. I can’t get enough of these golden sunsets and that light cast upon everything that is just so very… October. Everything has a magical glow, even the weeds. I’m kind of having a romance with it all. Even the hickory nuts that trip me up. So, techno...

The Rural Girl: August 2010

http://theruralgirl.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

August 26, 2010. When The Lights Go Out. There was quite a long power outage on Monday. From 10:15 until 3:30 am and then, it went out again at 4:45 am. It returned sometime around 6:30. Not sure as I wasn't home. Why? Well, my grandmother and cousin had a grand idea. When I called them at 5:00 am, they were just as miserable as me. No sleep due to lack of A/C and other issues. I had attempted sleep between 1 and 3 am. I snoozed a bit but I woke up so sweaty, it was just misery. You'll notice the lighter...

The Rural Girl: September 2010

http://theruralgirl.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

September 20, 2010. The world has taken on a golden hue… And the leaves haven’t even begun to change. There’s something different in the light of the sun. One evening, my mom and I spotted the apple tree at the edge of the forest, heavy with fruit. We grabbed a basket plus her dog and headed down the hill with minimal hope of filling it. In between dodging the poison oak and thorns, we successfully filled the basket to the point of overflowing. Pooh was pleased with our haul. Pop on the lid, set on high ...

The Rural Girl: RADvent : Day 5 - Drawing.

http://theruralgirl.blogspot.com/2011/12/radvent-day-5-drawing.html

December 8, 2011. RADvent : Day 5 - Drawing. Draw your best friend. At this point in my life, I'm blessed with more than one best friend. In fact, I have slight disdain for the term "best friend" because there is no best. They all bring something amazing to the table. No one is best. They all are. I was tempted to pull out my acrylics or watercolors. Something I'm much more comfortable using. Yet, that's not really drawing! Leave a drawing in a public place. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A small to...

Deon Matzen ~ The Rural Gallery ~ Oil Painting on Whidbey Island

Deon is primarily an oil painter painting scenes from vanishing rural America; old, unrestored trucks, garage sale detritus, dilapidated barns; recording the old sites and nostalgic bygone eras that are being overrun with urban sprawl, without romanticizing them. The Ruralhood

Thursday, August 6, 2015. I blame the turkeys. I'm the little girl, far right, in the photo. No fence separating us in this photo! Sorry for the grainy picture.). When I was a young child, my paternal grandparents (see header photo, bottom far right) were raising turkeys, probably. I was a child.). Turkeys were a different matter. One day we were visiting my grandparents and ended up outside the turkey pen, looking in through the wire. Bold, but not so beautiful, the turkeys moved closer to the wire fence.
