Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Two earthquakes strike Leyte and Samar within a 3-day span. A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck Samar, Philippines at a depth of 61 km (37.9 miles). The quake hit at 04:30:54 UTC Wednesday 1st February 2012. The epicenter was 75 km (46 miles) NNW of Guiuan, Samar, Philippines. Witnesses say that three consecutive mild shakes took place before reaching its peak. No tsunami warning nor reports of damage or casualties were learned as of posting time. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded at least 371 aftershocks since the 7.6 magnitude earthquake shook Eastern Samar Friday night, it revealed on on Monday. The agency said aftershocks, mostly in Guiuan and Burgos in Surigao del Norte, reached as high as magnitude 5. The cost of damages to infrastructure is estimated to be around P14.735 million.
