The Scribbling Apprentice: December 2010

http://www.thescribblingapprentice.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Where Do We Come From? Where Are We Going? Thursday, December 16, 2010. Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around. Wednesday, December 8, 2010. Nick Cave - Hallelujah (Live 2001). And now, words from another Anglican of a very different stripe, George Herbert - whose words are no less coruscating, no less haunting -. If we could see below. The sphere of virtue, and each shining grace,. As plainly, as that above doth shew;. That were the better sky, the brighter place. God hath made stars the foil.

Where Do We Come From? Where Are We Going? Tuesday, August 2, 2011. NT Wright: Adam and Eve. John Walton: How to Read Genesis 1. Pete Enns: Challenging Old Assumptions. Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer. Utters itself. So, a woman will lift. Her head from the sieve of her hands and stare. At the minims sung by a tree, a sudden gift. Some nights, although we are faithless, the truth. Enters our hearts, that small familiar pain;. Then a man will stand stock-still, hearing his youth.

About | John Reads

https://johnreads.wordpress.com/about

The blog and reading journal of some Irish guy trying to follow Jesus. I’m currently living in West Cork, Ireland with my wife Sarah. We got married in August, 2011 and moved down here after the wedding, because Sarah teaches at a local primary school. Back in 2008 I decided to take a one-year break from studying at the Irish Bible Institute. To get some experience serving as a Ministry Apprentice in Greystones Presbyterian Church. Amen | John Reads

The blog and reading journal of some Irish guy trying to follow Jesus. April 3, 2013. I hate it when my credit card reaches it’s expiry date and I get issued a new one. (First world problem, I know, but stick with me.) I have to update my card information on the online stores I use and if I have a regular charge on my card I have to call the company and give them my new card details. Another thing I hate is answering machines. Beep! And all from some little machine! What could I do but hang up? This wasn...

The blog and reading journal of some Irish guy trying to follow Jesus. March 9, 2013. ETC: Expository Preaching by Haddon W. Robinson – Chapters 1-3. The first book to get my ETC. Treatment is Haddon W. Robinson’s “Expository Preaching”. Or “Biblical Preaching”. As it’s called in the USA (you’ll find more stuff at that second link, including the ability to search the book). Of preaching, which brings me to this brilliant quote:. 8220;In spite of all the bad-mouthing of preachers and preaching” Robi...

He who has ears, let him hear | John Reads

https://johnreads.wordpress.com/2013/07/22/he-who-has-ears-let-him-hear

The blog and reading journal of some Irish guy trying to follow Jesus. July 22, 2013. He who has ears, let him hear. Someone handed me a tract today and asked me what I thought of Jesus. I told him that Jesus is my Lord and Saviour, but he didn’t hear me. He was too busy talking over me about what interesting times we are living in nowadays. I’m a soft-spoken man, but it’s not hard to hear me when I’m standing right in front of you. I gave him back his tract. View all posts by John ». Laquo; Previous post.

The blog and reading journal of some Irish guy trying to follow Jesus. October 22, 2012. The King Jesus Gospel by Scot McKnight. This started off as a review of Scot McKnight’s book The King Jesus Gospel. Scot McKnight came to the Irish Bible Institute. Our system is broken and our so-called gospel broke it. We have a salvation culture in the evangelical church today. What we need is a gospel culture. McKnight introduces four categories in his discussion of what the gospel is:. 1 The Story of Israel.

A Mini-Rant | John Reads

https://johnreads.wordpress.com/2013/05/11/a-mini-rant

The blog and reading journal of some Irish guy trying to follow Jesus. May 11, 2013. Can I just get this out there and then maybe some people can tell me I’m over-reacting, or maybe I have a point? It might be worth discussing. We want to see Jesus lifted high. A banner that flies across the land. That all men might see the truth and know. He is the way to heaven. 8220;He is the way to heaven”? That’s the message you want to get out about Jesus? That He is the way to get somewhere? Laquo; Previous post.

January 14, 2017. The last time I stood in the sun, the memories, damp from Friday nights seemed to dry, I could feel the cold fading away the warmth of belonging to myself setting in. I feel it almost every month. So on some Sunday mornings they tasted like warm coffee while they became a bitter nostalgia by Monday afternoons. And… Continue reading Lapse of Memory.
