Finding the perfect, affordable, shoes to go with a historical dress. That can be a challenge. Well, my sister nailed it when she found these cute old brown shoes at Goodwill for $6. Thus, the shoes came home with us. My sister wore them once and the sole started to come off of one shoe. Well that wasn't going to work! That took so...

Related Posts with thumbnails Scripts and Styles Start-. Sewing and Raising Alpine Dairy Goats. . . and occasionally finding time to do other stuff. Tuesday, December 13, 2016. Crushed Green Stretch Velvet. My mom's 1890's dress. As are the rest of the costumes I got to make/put together for the Christmas play (7 in all)! The past week was spent finishing those costumes in time for dress rehearsal Saturday evening. Every spare moment was spent working on them, and they're finally done! Oh, well. This...

The Jeanius 5-Pocket 7 1/2-Pair Jean Jacket. I wanted a long full skirted jean jacket. I've wanted one for a while now and my ample supply of old jeans seemed just the thing to become said jacket. The jacket will happen." I kept thinking. It's too hot to make a jacket now." I told myself. Then I was ready to cut out the sleeves,...

Tea Dyeing Lace for the 1890's. I love lace. Love it, love it, love it. I'm always happy to use lace on any of my sewing projects. Finding reasonably accurate looking lace for historical dresses, however? Now that can be a chore! Almost all the lace that I can find and afford is synthetic, and looks it (way too shiny! After a very fun filled week at camp involving a hot air balloon ride and a zipline, my little sister is home! It was a rather quiet week around here without her, it's good to have her back! Thanks to the loose cut and the elasticized back this dress required no functioning buttons or zipper, score! It's good to have her home again!

Jeans to dress refashion « whatthesew

Jeans to dress refashion. September 12, 2016. This will be my entry for refashioners 2016. I don’t really wear jeans. My reasons are that they are too tight, and I don’t like wearing tight clothes, the fabric is too heavy and stiff, which makes them uncomfortable, and waistbands normally sit right in the middle of my stomach area, which cuts me in half when I sit down. I do, however, like denim fabric. I have made a number of household items from denim – tea cosies, cushions etc. In the end I set the bar...

I found this simple peach striped shirt in the men’s department for $3.50. The shirt fit just fine, but it was a little boring. Also, please ignore the the small red stain in the picture — I had a cherry popsicle earlier in the day. Posted in Jennifer Elliott.

Days with a lazy writer and busy crafter. God’s Good Girls. REFASHION 7: MY FIRST CIRCLE SKIRT. Posted in 2016 Resolution: 12 Challenges. With a ton of shirts in my refashion bin, I need to really work on whittling down that number. So, I pulled four different blue shirts and cut them into pieces to form a circle. Once the pieces were cut, I simply sewed them together, creating a beautiful circle, and added 2-inch black elastic to the waistband. Easy peasy. Cut the shirts into angled strips. Years ago wh...

Days with a lazy writer and busy crafter. God’s Good Girls. REFASHION: TWO SKIRTS FOR TOVA. Posted in Jennifer Elliott. So, I used one tiny last remaining piece from a white pillowcase to finish off the casing for the waist. After hemming the bottom of the skirt and inserting the elastic in the casing, Tova’s grey floral skirt was completed! From the first light grey pillowcase I made a cute little wrap skirt for Tova, but it had some minor issues. Instead of fixing the problems, I made a simple elas...

There's a list of things I'd like to get done before I leave. People to see, places to go, things to do, pictures to take, and of course lots of sewing, make up this list. Well, early this month I finished my mom's 1890's dress. For the (postponed) church Christmas play so an 1890's photo shoot was pretty high on this list. So we...

Gillian's Guide to Sewing
Friday, February 24, 2012. Tutorial 102 - Simple seams and a hem. A seam is a line of stitches which holds two or more layers of fabric together. If a seam were sewn right at the edge of the fabric layers, the fabric would fray and the seam would fall apart. To stop this from happening, at the side of any seam you sew, you need to include a seam allowance. So let's cut some more fabric and turn you into a seamstress! A scrap piece of fabric - approx. 20 x 30 cm (8" x 12"). Your fabric needn't be ...An ex...
