The Shakespeare Diaries: February 2012

http://theshakespearediaries.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 13, 2012. A Glooming Peace and the Aftermath of Tragedy. I love the idea of exploring what happens to the surviving characters of Shakespeare's tragedies. I wrote this short story last summer while I was studying "Romeo and Juliet" in preparation for directing it. I welcome your thoughts. I thought I heard her call to me the night she died the first time. I had only just left her chamber and a faint call of, “Nurse! 8221; reached my ears. If I had, all might have been saved. 8220;And wha...

The Shakespeare Diaries: Outrageous Fortune

http://theshakespearediaries.blogspot.com/2012/02/outrageous-fortune.html

Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Sadly, it's been a year since my last post. It's difficult for me to keep on top of this for a number of reasons, namely time and commitment issues. But now that I have been blessed with a regular playwriting schedule (thanks to my mother for watching my youngest child two days a week! From my own daughters when they come of age. I wonder if I'll ever be able to convince them that yes, in fact, I do understand them. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

The Shakespeare Diaries: November 2010

http://theshakespearediaries.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 24, 2010. I can't believe it is that time of year again, but so it goes. The time has come to generate a new play, but as of yet, not one brilliant idea has come to me. "Hamlet"? Everyone dies in the end. "Romeo and Juliet"? Likewise. "As You Like It"? Not a fan. "Midsummer"? What philosophical conundrum can I pose to my students and my audience? Would it all have turned out the same or would the story have a happy ending? Or how about a courtroom drama? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The Shakespeare Diaries: January 2010

http://theshakespearediaries.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 29, 2010. Thursday, January 28, 2010. The project: write a play with 30 roles, based on Shakespeare, for 30 middle school students by July, 2010. The idea: A merging of "Othello" and "Much Ado About Nothing" in which Iago takes Don John under his wing to teach him to be evil. Other characters include Desdemona, the ill-fated wife of Othello, the barbed-tongued Beatrice and Benedick, and an all female watch led by the bumbling Dogberry (also a woman) , and many, many others.

The Shakespeare Diaries: February 2010

http://theshakespearediaries.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 8, 2010. I took my daughters to the Denver Art Museum to see an exhibit entitled "Embrace! What is theatre about? Thursday, February 4, 2010. Much Ado About Leaping to Conclusions. Unlike Romeo and Juliet who are entirely held hostage by their parents' feud and culture of hate, Claudio and Hero have the freedom to speak to each other and the support of everyone around them. So why does Claudio not confront Hero with his suspicions instead of shaming her at the wedding?

All you need to know about Shakespeare

All You Need To Know About. Much Ado About Nothing. A Midsummer Night's Dream. As You Like It. What we know next is that by the time 1592 rolled around, Shakespeare was a London playwright with enough of a reputation to get denounced as an "upstart Crow, beautified with our feathers" by Robert Greene (who was a contemporary of Shakespeare). In 1596 his son Hamnet died, which some say is the base for The Tragical History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Another reason Shakespeare is so important is that it c...
