The Skipper's Blog

The everyday story of life at the bottom of the cricketing food chain. Monday, May 12, 2008. Holgate Fox v Golden Ball at Heslington, 11th May 2008. In contrast to last year's corresponding fixture, which was played in steady rain, the sun shone all day long. Golden Ball Skipper Pete Mitchell called correctly and chose to bat on a hard dry pitch with a tinge of green. Joining Hellewell at the crease, Jack Gabbatiss played some lovely shots, including a particularly sweetly-timed on-drive between midwicke...

Honours Board - Golden Ball Cricket Club

http://peopleinwhites.peopleinblack.org.uk/honours.html

Below is the honours board, showing outstanding batting performances for the club. Bowling honours will follow eventually. There are plenty of gaps and inconsistencies, which I hope to rectify as soon as I can. It's an ongoing process of deciphering old scorebooks and teeth-clenchingly tedious data entry, so I'm not putting any timescale on it. Worcester Tap and Spile. Halifax Tap and Spile. A fantastic traditional pub within the City walls. Please check the Skipper's blog. For latest news, match reports and various semi-coherent witterings.

The Golden Ball

http://peopleinwhites.peopleinblack.org.uk/pub.html

The Golden Ball, Cromwell Road, York. The team's home is the Golden Ball, a fine traditional inn hidden away inside the city walls. Run by Linda and Dave Foster, the Ball is a warm and welcoming pub with a fine beer garden and an exemplary selection of real ales. Win or lose, it is a fine place to repair to after a long afternoon's ball chasing. As well as the cricket team, the pub has a dartboard and one of the few remaining bar billiards tables in the county. Visit the pub's website.

Bootham Park - A Lovely Ground

http://peopleinwhites.peopleinblack.org.uk/ground.html

Within sight and earshot of the majestic gothic Minster and so close to Bootham Crescent you can hear the sighs of resignation as the York City faithful acclimatise themselves to another season of teeth-grinding anguish, Bootham Park is home to Bootham Park Cricket Club. Although the cricket square only dates back to the club's founding in 1985, the ground is situated at the heart of this ancient city's history. It's a very nice place to play cricket.

The Skipper Says...

July 6th, 2014. The Eagle Rock Yacht Club boldly challenged the boundaries of good taste this season…. Hellip; with its latest theme: “Too Soon” – open to interpretation, but primarily defined as too soon to joke about something tragic. Much like a good game of Cards Against Humanity, it was like a litmus test poised to reveal exactly how terrible of people your fellow dodgeballers are. February 25th, 2014. Welcome to the Skipper s Library. It is an ecclectic collection of books on marine subjects, from ancient seafaring and Triremes to the fighting Navies to Merchant shipping and yachting by way of scurvy, mutiny and fiction to technical tomes on navigation through Hydrography to marine engineering. The collection has been built up piecemeal and so has no unifying thread other than ships, the sea and the people who inhabit it. Select a Book Cateogry. Aircraft carriers of the world.
