The Sociological Observer

Reflections on our social world from a sociological perspective. I cited this in an earlier post on walking in France, A pied. What makes this sociological? We seem to have reached a point where we just don't see the point of continuing, if our steps aren't going to count towards our daily total. I'm not sure what that says about me, but I'll ponder it as I work on my step totals over this long Memorial Day weekend, on a fresh battery charge. Friday, May 22, 2015. Links to this post. The Sociological Observer: October 2013

Reflections on our social world from a sociological perspective. A beautiful gate and doorway in Aix's Villeneuve. Weekends are family time in France . People tend to spend their time en famille. Together with family at home), or at a second family home or with relatives. Some go into town together like in Aix, where we see many families in town on Saturdays; the grocery stores and marchés. Sundays are protected by French law, for le repos dominical. A graffiti filled stairwell on the east side of Aix.

The Sociological Observer: January 2014

http://www.thesociologicalobserver.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Reflections on our social world from a sociological perspective. Midlife crises have long been the privilege of men in society. The seemingly impulsive desire for a sports car or the beginning of an extramarital affair or the sudden ending of a marriage have been emblematic markers of, and excuses for, midlife crises for some men. (I'm not sure that this is applicable to Monsieur le Président Hollande of France whose current philandering was the subject of my previous post- see La trahison. In some socie...

The Sociological Observer: December 2013

Reflections on our social world from a sociological perspective. The big (and) easy. I discovered this enormous coffee mug in a U.S. hotel room this week. Cheek kisses), particularly from my kids' friends. In France, I was ALWAYS greeted with two cheek kisses by the boys' friends (not to mention all of their sports' teammates and the teammates' parents), but now I'm not sure I'd get much eye contact with some if I wasn't so insistent on hugging the kids I haven't seen in two years. The Sociological Observer: A pied

http://www.thesociologicalobserver.com/2012/04/pied.html

Reflections on our social world from a sociological perspective. Despite my current obsession with the French driving rules that I must master in order to get a French driver's license, I do not regularly use the one car our family owns here. (I tell why I need that license in an earlier post, April 2012 A is for Autoecole. In contrast, in Aix, I take care of virtually everything à pied. On foot) or en ligne. Freeway) to the end of the other boy's sports practice, I am in the minority as a walker. Ju...

Naapurina Provencessa: Luopumisia ja kiitos!

http://naapurinaprovencessa.blogspot.com/2015/05/luopumisia-ja-kiitos.html

Sunnuntai 31. toukokuuta 2015. Tänä keväänä mielen on vallanut aika lailla yksi sana. Luopuminen.

Why are the British so fussy about horsemeat? | Les blogs

http://beyond.blogs.france24.com/article/2013/02/13/why-british-fussy-eating-horsemeat-scandal-france-0

Watching France watching the world. Wed, 02/13/2013 - 20:27. Why are the British so fussy about horsemeat? While the French huff, puff, point fingers at Romania and call for stricter controls on meat imports, there is one part of the horsemeat affair that has intrigued them even more than the scandal itself. Why are the British so revolted by eating horse flesh? Much like the rest of continental Europe, the French are far less prudish towards. Shock and confusion for the Brits.
