Monday, February 27, 2012. Just last Friday my 1st grade kiddos finished up a unit on magnets. I love teaching science at this age because they are so curious about everything! This magnet unit was a great way to bring in some hands on science practice. None of these lessons are super intense- all I'm looking for is a way to teach the content, but still keep the main focus on learning English. Thanks for stopping by my fun little teaching blog! My name is Abby and I'm a 1st grade teacher in Georgia. I work in a Title 1 school with a majority of ESL students. This year I have 20 students and I collaborate with a SDD-1 class of 12 students. I taught all over the place before beginning my current job as a first grade teacher: substitute, 3rd grade, art, SID/PID parapro, MOID parapro, ESOL to 1st and K, and ASD parapro. One of the fifth grade TEKS (standards) in Texas is for students to identify how an author uses "sensory details".It will most likely show up on our STAAR test. I LOVE this skill, because it is the perfect opportunity for our students to read like writers and write like readers, you know? They really have to think like an author!
