Monday, March 30, 2015. We are working hard at our close reading in our room, and I truly see my students become better thinkers and "discussers" about the texts we are reading. I have been looking for more and more short texts to use with them.even first pages of novels, articles, and so on. This week we are going to use a short story by Cynthia Rylant called "Slower Than the Rest"- you may be familiar with it. It's a meaty story but its central ideas are still really accessible to fourth graders. Today...

Saturday, November 29, 2014. The Herding Game: Introducing Division Concepts. So, it's that time of year when I have to introduce division concepts to my students. Some have had some experience and understand the idea of "sharing" that accompanies division. Others even understand the relationship between multiplication and division. The rules are simple.I call out an animal and a number of "herds" they need to make. I might say "Buffalo- herds of 5" and the students rush to form groups of that ma...We th...

Fourth Grade Flipper: Tried It Tuesday {Business Cards}
http://fourthgradeflipper.blogspot.com/2014/07/tried-it-tuesday-business-cards.html
Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Tried It Tuesday {Business Cards}. Yesterday I enjoyed my first Monday on summer vacation! That first Monday is probably the best morning of vacation. I leisurely made it out of bed around 7:00 (the kids make it impossible to sleep much later but it is still "sleeping in"). I enjoyed my coffee, took my daughter to swimming lessons at 10:00, then took the kids with me to kickboxing class. They had about five other kids to play with while I worked out.that's a win-win! I used Power P...
Objectively valid rendering of reality? Or false reasoning? – Social constructivism! – A journey of ICTs with Anne
https://annedebruin.wordpress.com/2015/07/28/objectively-valid-rendering-of-reality-or-false-reasoning-social-constructivism/comment-page-1
A journey of ICTs with Anne. Here in EDC3100 success is a journey not a destination! Objectively valid rendering of reality? 8211; Social constructivism! So after a great deal of resistance from my current schemas, I have begun my reflection on whether social constructivism is valid or not. Now as some may know, it takes a great deal of contrary evidence and disconfirming experiences for my paradigmatic assumptions. I am reflecting about Donald Clark’s blog post. 3 Piaget was vague on his concepts. It is...

A journey of ICTs with Anne. Here in EDC3100 success is a journey not a destination! Wow I so underestimated Google Apps! So after reading week 8 I have realised there is substantial benefit in learning how to navigate and use Google Forms. A have never known this (and may be a little embarrassed to admit it) but you can create surveys and quizzes from Google Forms to use in assessment and basically anything. This link. Or http:/ tinyurl.com/ . Embed the form in a Google Site, wiki, blog or website.

Saturday, 20 July 2013. Teacher Area Optimum Organization {PROJECT CLASSROOM SERIES}. It's that time of the week! Last year, my old room didn't have any space for a teacher area. I just ended up with a battered old desk tucked against the wall. This year, I decided to take action and commandeer an entire corner of our classroom as MINE! Feel free to turn away now. I won't be offended if you never return. Who am I to provide organisational tips with a command centre like this? So, as I'm moving room again.

The Teacher's Way | What is the Teacher's Way?
What is the Teacher's Way? The Teacher’s Way represents my conviction that writing can change lives. At-risk students are given the message that college will bring them success but they are often poorly prepared to adequately represent their own accomplishments. The Teachers Way represents a resource for parents, teachers and students, by providing superior coaching for individual students, writing workshops for large groups and professional development for educators. What is the Teacher's Way?
The Teachers We Need | A blog by Katharine B. Stevens, Ph.D.
The Teachers We Need. A blog by Katharine B. Stevens, Ph.D. Firing teachers: mission impossible. February 28, 2014. If there’s one thing that’s important to good schools, it’s good teachers. That’s the premise of a groundbreaking lawsuit now being heard in Los Angeles Supreme Court that challenges entrenched California state laws protecting the jobs of public school teachers who are grossly ineffective. The nine student plaintiffs, Vergara vs. California, argue that laws protecting […].
