August 12, 2015. I have observed lately well-meaning infant and toddler teachers giving high fives to congratulate a child when he or she does something that pleases the teacher. I would like to discourage this practice for two reasons. First of all, it is better practice to praise or congratulate the child by stating exactly what you see the child do, then if possible recognizing the (positive) effects, for example: “You put away all the blocks.
