But what transpired on those streets of Delhi so long ago? More than a misspelled sandwich shop. It’s a fairly cool place, when you’re well. Join us as we discover how I wasn’t. Xamen Ek: May 2008

http://thetravellator.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 20, 2008. Part 8 – Jaipur. Moving from the train to the bus system in India is best likened to a man who, in his desperation to remove his leg caught in a meat grinder, catches the other one as well. Ticket counter man: “You need to wait in line.”. Brian: “No, here’s the ticket, give me my money.”. Ticket counter man (looking over the ticket): “You didn’t do a good job pasting it, go back and do it again.”. Brian: “No, give me my money.”. What’s the hurry? The apparent answer: freeze. Be...

Monday, October 01, 2007. Labo(u)r Day in Toronto. The great, all-American holiday of Labor Day heralded the end of summer and so I, like Bill Clinton in wartime, headed up to Canada. I had heard the legend of Toronto from many of my Canadian friends so I had to see to believe. I met my good buddy, Andrew the Canadian, at the Toronto airport. Andrew the Canadian is a baller. As honorary Canadian baller I checked into the Sheraton downtown. Here are the luscious waterfulls of our hotel. After a relaxing/h...

Thursday, January 31, 2008. Part 3: Elephanta Island. A great little day trip from Bombay is found in Elephanta Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We hopped a ferry directly in front of the Gateway to India and an hour later we were on the long, sunbaked walkway from the dock to Elephanta Island. A quarter mile staircase, leading past a couple dozen trinket booths, finally crested near the entrance to the Elephanta Caves. It appears that about 1000 years ago (between 9. As I’ve mentioned before. And S...

Tuesday, October 31, 2006. Bali and Surabaya, Indonesia. Which are the ingeniously titled moving walkways in Singapore. You’re going from Surabaya to Denpasar? They don’t speak English in Java, it’ll take a day to get there, transportation is bad…” I’m sure he kept going, but with eyes and jaw wide open I boarded the plane. With my 5 free hours I decided to see the city. So I sat down at a little café where a few guys my age were sitting. Here they are:. Here is a picture of a Buddhist shrine:. As a resu...

Thursday, February 28, 2008. Part 6: Village Tour around Jodhpur. On the way, we witnessed our only elephant spotting in India. The head and front were all painted but we only had time to grab our cameras and take a picture of the hindquarters as we passed. UNICEF works on a myriad of projects for children the world over. In this village, they’ve organized a small school. And yes, those are my glasses on his face. Each village is composed of a single ethnic/religious group. The diversity of beliefs b...

Friday, April 30, 2010. Last night, I got together with some great friends, made a Provençal. French stew and watched Coco Before Chanel. Her character (which I'm assuming is based on her actual persona) wasn't entirely likable, but the movie was a feast of beautiful French scenery. And of course the costumes were nothing short of completely, utterly and ridiculously amazing. Either way, it was fascinating to see the origins of a fashion icon who was universally ahead of her time. Thursday, April 29, 2010.

Friday, May 28, 2010. Mess up my heart and proceed to tempt me. I saw two genuinely wonderful movies recently: Young Victoria. Both of them were visual banquets of amazing costumes and had great story lines that played out with just the right amount of theatricality. Also, the casts - OMG the amazingly attractive and talented roster of thespians. Between Marion Cotillard's classy moves and Penelope Cruz's sexy solos, I'm pretty sure I went gay for about 90 minutes. I'm kind of easily excitable. It's far ...

Saturday, January 30, 2010. Bistro cakes and sugar flakes. One my favorite ways to waste time during the day on the weekend is to find a yummy brunch spot and just lounge around. Although Austin doesn't have row after row of quaint pedestrian streets lined with cutesy cafes run by culinarily-gifted locals, we do have several lovely food carts that have just as much variety and homegrown flavors. The latest addition to our food cart scene is La Boite Cafe. I def hope to spend some time there this weekend.
