The title “Two Worlds” comes from the idea of a ‘first’ and ‘third’ world existing in the same place. Last summer I travelled to South Africa with a UK-based volunteering programme. When I arrived I wasn’t struck by the presence of impoverished communities. What impacted me, however, was the proximity of these communities to the South African ‘first world’. Day 1 – Arrivals. Posted 26 May 2010 Journal. It was a long flight but it didn’t feel like 12 hours. Accompanied by a group of 15 people I’d never previously met, we set off on high spirits. On the plane we acquainted ourselves better through conversation ranging from faith to journal keeping to the rules of the card game ‘top trump’ (which I still do not understand). First time eating raw oysters from the shell – I had to ask the kind waitress to show me how. They were nice and fresh, though not something i’d eat everyday. The bar finds itself on the waterfront. Ramadan – END. Posted 21 August 2010 Journal. It’s been over a month since I used my own laptop to write my blog. How apt then, for it to be the last I write in South Africa. Leaving Heathrow on the 25th May, I’ve been here for 87 days. That’s 2 months and 26 days, more than 12 weeks and some 2088 hours! That, for me, is a good enough reason to have been here.
