The Tyne and Beyond: St Nicholas Cathedral

St Nicholas was originally a large parish church, dedicated to St Nicholas the patron saint of children in 1194, it became a cathedral on 25 July 1882. The Cathedral holds many interesting carvings, statues and monumnets including the colourful Maddison Monument showing Henry Maddison who died in 1634, with his wife Elizabeth both kneeling at a prayer table with their 16 children gathered beneath them. The remains of a thirteenth century Dominican friary, only the cloisters remain now and are now home to craft shops and a restaurant, the lawns are a lovely place to sit on a warm summer’s day however it has a rather eerie atmosphere after dark and the ghost of a long dead monk has been seen and heard on many occasions over the years! The continental Christmas Market has been starting off the Christmas celebrations in Newcastle since 2002. Over 50 stalls with produce from Germany, France Belgium, Holland and Spain turn the area around Grey’s Monument and Old Eldon Square into a cosmopolitan market place selling food, and gifts such as Belgian chocolate, Dutch and French cheese and pates, hand crafted gifts jewellery, glassware and ornaments. In 1265 the town walls were built to protect against invasion from Scottish raiders. The walls were not completed until the middle of the 14th Century they were over two miles in length and reached up to 25 ft high and at places 7 ft thick enclosing both the castle and the Black Gate. There were six gateways, seventeen towers and smaller lookout turrets. There are also remains of the City Walls behind the Central Station. All Saints Church Quayside. Banqueting Hall (Jesmond Dene).

The Literary and Philosophical Society. Founded in 1793 as a conversation club the society still has an active membership with a full programme of lectures. The present building was opened in 1825. On October 20 1880 the lecture theatre was the first public room to be lit by electric light during a lecture given by Sir Joseph Swan, and it was here that George Stephenson demonstrated his miners’ safety lamp in 1815.
