The Unexpected Librarian

Monday, December 22, 2014. My Year on Klikitat Street. If I were in sixth grade this year, I might have flunked reading. Because I read more books by Beverly Cleary than any other author, and in a leveled reading system that would be a decided misdemeanor. It wasn’t a philosophical statement or even a conscious decision to put the sagas of Klikitat Street on top of The Goldfinch. My all-time favorite Cleary book is Ramona the Pest. Miss Binney faced the twenty-nine earnest members of the kindergarten, al...

The Unexpected Librarian: The Character Arc, or, Why I Hate Sit-Coms

http://www.theunexpectedlibrarian.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-character-arc-or-why-i-hate-sit-coms.html

Monday, December 15, 2014. The Character Arc, or, Why I Hate Sit-Coms. I'm one of those people who cringes at the very sound of a laugh track. I find it insulting: “What, you think I don’t know when to laugh? 8221; And though I have loved many a sit com, from "I Love Lucy" to "All in the Family" to "Modern Family," I sort of hate myself for it. The problem isn't really the laugh track. It's not the slapstick humor. The problem for me is character arc. Or actually, the lack thereof. Do you love sit-coms?

The Unexpected Librarian: Do you read directions?

http://www.theunexpectedlibrarian.blogspot.com/2007/11/do-you-read-directions.html

Wednesday, November 21, 2007. Do you read directions? I never did before library school and the computer boot camp finally wore me down. Oh, it was hard! It was almost like switching religions, to go from a sunny belief in serendipity to deciding that I could achieve mastery and precision if I tried. This comment has been removed by the author. Hellibrarian: Explaining the municipal pool

http://hellibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/11/explaining-municipal-pool.html

Thursday, November 20, 2008. Explaining the municipal pool. I don't know why so many of the Newcomers are Dominican- maybe because public education is required in Mexico but not in the D.R? Do you know T- -" (He named the town). I nodded. "Me and my uncle went to the pool there and they didn't let us in and my uncle say it because we are black. Maybe since Obama is President they don't do that more.". R- , does your uncle live in T- -? I asked. "No, he live here," he replied. Posted by Helen T. Wiesel, E...

Hellibrarian: Isolation

http://hellibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/11/isolation-part-i.html

Tuesday, November 25, 2008. One of my colleagues said to me the other day that it must be hard for me not having my lunch period or meetings with other teachers. Just the fact that she acknowledged that was important. I mean, I am not so into the faculty lounge thing which can really turn into gossip central, but her acknowledgment that I am isolated meant a lot to me. Socializing with my present colleagues is odd and difficult for me. Analysis:. Then there are the circumstances and nature of my job:.

Hellibrarian: I didn't take children's oral fixations into account.

http://hellibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/09/i-didnt-take-childrens-oral-fixations.html

Monday, September 8, 2008. I didn't take children's oral fixations into account. There are some thing entirely predictable at my school. For instance, I am not the least bit surprised that, as the school year begins, the circulation system is down, my desk phone is not working, my email is not working, and that those in charge of fixing these things are unresponsive. Hellibrarian: 30 percent

http://hellibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/09/30-percent.html

Thursday, September 25, 2008. Three cases at my school. I'll start with the one that made me very happy yesterday. The first week of school when I saw my bilingual 4th grade, I asked: "Where's A? Anyway, this year she's in the fourth grade- luckily she's short and cute so she looks more like a nine-year-old than an eleven-year-old. So when I saw her class for the first time a couple of weeks ago and she wasn't there, I said, "Where's A? Posted by Helen T. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Base, Grahame...

Hellibrarian: Theo, psychic messaging, and Desiderata

http://hellibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/09/theo-psychic-messaging-and-desiderata.html

Wednesday, September 3, 2008. Theo, psychic messaging, and Desiderata. 1992-1996: Budapest, Hungary. My dear friend Theo and I were writing partners in the old days in Budapest at the Astoria hotel coffeehouse, take out notebooks and a copy of Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones, and write and critique together. When I started blogging last year, coincidentally, he started blogging at the same time. He recently wrote this post about using mysticism to cope with one's job. Desiderata, by Max Ehrmann.

Friday, December 5, 2008. Philosophy of a Home, Part 2. Read Part 1 first! I feel it when I go into a shop in Boro Park and see hats for $200 apiece- how is it that people can be so extravagant?
