Hard red spring wheat is referred to in our area as DNS. DNS stands for Dark Northern Spring and is primarily raised in Montana and North and South Dakota. There are different varieties of lentils and I have raised two, red lentils and small browns. Each variety has its own market and everything we raise is exported to other countries. Very little of what is raised in our area is used for consumption in the United States. Life on the Farm.

Alfalfa has mainly been raised on Blair Farms as a food source for cows and horses. It is high in nutrients and contains the roughage needed to have healthy animals. In 2007 Blair Farms planted alfalfa for seed purposes to see if it could be profitable as in our crop rotation. Life on the Farm.

Winter wheat provides our operation with the highest yield and economic returns of all of our crops. Our yields can range from an average of 80 bushels on a bad year to 120 bushels on a good one. A ton is 2,000 pounds and our average yield for malt barley is 2 tons per acres. Malt barely is planted in the spring. We use barley in our planting rotation to break up disease cycles. Malt barely is used in the process to make beer and Idaho is the second largest producer of barley in the United States. Life on the Farm.
