The Van Winkle Project

Sept 11, 2011. Thursday, March 21, 2013. Amazing Quote From a Favorite Work of Fiction. So I was rereading a quirky, one-of-a-kind book by the gifted Canadian author, Douglas Coupland. Who will forever be famous for popularizing the terms "Generation X," "McJob" and "Microserf.". I speak of Coupland's 1994 undersized volume of thematically linked short stories,. Like this one on p. 103 where he's remembering the old distaster flick from the '70s,. For one year and wake up and have a whole year's backlog.

The Van Winkle Project: The A,B,C's of the News - C is for (Sorry) Charlie Sheen

http://thevanwinkleproject.blogspot.com/2011/10/abcs-of-news-c-is-for-sorry-charlie.html

Sept 11, 2011. Friday, October 14, 2011. The A,B,C's of the News - C is for (Sorry) Charlie Sheen. Today I conclude my brief foray into learning about what is probably some of the least consequential news of last year. I'm sorry to even know about what that man did. And now we come to the last of the news not worth knowing. As I contemplate getting caught up on the real. It sounds so heavy. It's much easier to delay with C. Charlie Sheen. Tabloid junk food. Come to Daddy. Gesture of the Jester. I've also...

The Van Winkle Project: News-zilla and Running the Gantlet

http://thevanwinkleproject.blogspot.com/2010/10/news-zilla-and-running-gantlet.html

Sept 11, 2011. Monday, October 4, 2010. News-zilla and Running the Gantlet. The News-zilla Screen at Gate D28. M traveling this week in order to attend a conference at a major city in the American Midwest. That's how I found myself in a hub airport. It appears that since I was last in this place flat screens have moved to the next level. They have multiplied, consolidated, and they may be about to take over the world. Which brings the innocent airport lounger and gate sitter 24/7 cable news. People in tra...

The Van Winkle Project: My Top News Story for 2011

http://thevanwinkleproject.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-top-news-story-for-2011.html

Sept 11, 2011. Sunday, January 1, 2012. My Top News Story for 2011. It's clear to me that I'm not qualified to name the top news story. What do I know about most of last year? From January 1, 2010 to September 11, 2011, I was still unplugged from the news. I was doing my best to imitate a guy named Van Winkle. Asleep," I was fully committed to my 365-day, 24/7 news-snooze. For example, I thought I might choose the death of Osama Bin Laden. That was a big story, right? They tell me that William and Kate's...

The Van Winkle Project: Baby Baby: Thoughts on a Crowded Planet

http://thevanwinkleproject.blogspot.com/2011/10/baby-baby-thoughts-on-crowded-planet.html

Sept 11, 2011. Thursday, October 20, 2011. Baby Baby: Thoughts on a Crowded Planet. Is it coming to this? Packed in tight, togetherness. As I very slowly get caught up on some of the news I missed during The Van Winkle Project. I still haven't looked at the newspaper. I saved that heralds arguably the biggest news story of 2011: the death of Osama Bin Laden. That's where I thought I'd be today. My nose and eyes and mind tipped toward Pakistan. But history surges ahead. One way to think of the earth's new...

The Van Winkle Project: Literary Analysis of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving

http://thevanwinkleproject.blogspot.com/2010/09/literary-analysis-of-rip-van-winkle-by.html

Sept 11, 2011. Thursday, September 16, 2010. Literary Analysis of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving. Ait a minute. Did someone say "literary analysis"? I don't think so. The tale of Rip Van Winkle doesn't exactly present the same kind of special challenges as trying to figure out what happened in a Christopher Nolan film (. Or peeling back the onion layers in James Joyce's. If I pretend otherwise, I think there's a good chance you might join ol' Rip. Z.z.z.z.z. Rip Van Hen Pecked. As a child I never re...

Faith, Theology and Fun. The Christian's Call To Nonviolence. Today, many blogs and websites are discussing the great work of Martin Luther King Jr. One of my favorite bloggers discussed the nonviolent resistance of the Civil Rights movement. As posted to the left, the books I have been reading heavily discuss nonviolent and political action. Bonhoeffer and King were both big proponents of nonviolence. By Richard B.
