a very, very, very amateur naturalist!: the toadlet that time forgot

http://theveryamateurnaturalist.blogspot.com/2011/04/toadlet-that-time-forgot.html

A very, very, very amateur naturalist! And all his idiotic opinions. Tuesday, 12 April 2011. The toadlet that time forgot. Awwww, isn't he a cutie? These photos were taken on March 28th. I was checking under the tiles in our back garden, feeling pretty smug about having Slow Worms. But what will happen to it now? I'm assuming it will still be able to cary on it's metamorphosis and become an adult Toad. Assuming it survives. Slow Worms and Grass Snakes are a lot more active at this time of year th...Oh an...

A very, very, very amateur naturalist! And all his idiotic opinions. Friday, 8 April 2011. I'm in the middle of a seabird colony. As are probably the large majority of people reading this blog. You might not have realised it yet though. Before saying anything on this matter, I'll just state the few little things I saw today. After singing Chiffchaffs on the 5th, I topped that with a Willow Warbler. Today Otherwise very few birds are around at the moment. But I saw a few more Cabbage Whites. And once they...

A very, very, very amateur naturalist! And all his idiotic opinions. Saturday, 23 April 2011. New type of layout. I felt a bit like experimenting. Now, this may completely ruin my blog, but I hardly get any readers anyway so what the hell. This blog will still have a purpose. This'll be where I spew out links to all my various out-pages with the actual writing and pictures on them. They are the secondary pages, and this blog might just serve as a neat little homepage. Effectively, I think I c...Today I m...

a very, very, very amateur naturalist!: the naturalist's rulebook

http://theveryamateurnaturalist.blogspot.com/p/naturalists-rulebook.html

A very, very, very amateur naturalist! And all his idiotic opinions. A useful collection of tips, advice and stuff I will add to as I carry on down the dark path towards ecological enlightenment. Always carry binoculars (easy one). Never carry a telescope unless you are going to be sitting still (i.e seawatching). Never carry a telescope in the rain, in hot weather or strong wind. Always take your camera. Never use your camera until you have looked at your subject for at least 30 seconds in great detail.

Searching for animals, all over the world: December 2011

http://stickbugdiver.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Searching for animals, all over the world. Wednesday, December 21, 2011. No birding today :-(. Well, I forgot about how long I have school on Wednesday and how early it gets dark in the winter. Today was the shortest day of the whole year and since I had school until 3PM it made no sense to go search for the Velvet Scoters. Before I would have found them the light would have been already gone. I hope I get to try for them on Friday. Tuesday, December 20, 2011. I WANT TO GO BIRDING! In the last month I ha...

http://stickbugdiver.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Searching for animals, all over the world. Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Ship passages to and from Heligoland. It was almost impossible to get some good pictures during the ship passages, even though I saw some nice birds:. 3 Parasitic Jaegers (NEW). 1 Pomarine Jaeger (NEW). 3 Red-throated Loons (NEW). 8 Black Scoters (NEW). 1 Greater Scaup (NEW). 11 Grey Seals (NEW). There were lots of new birds during those passages, that I haven't seen while being on Heligoland itself. Sunday, November 27, 2011. 1 male ...

an amateur's birds: what an Ice day

http://theveryamateurnaturalistsbirds.blogspot.com/2011/04/what-ice-day.html

Part of http:/ theveryamateurnaturalist.blogspot.com/. Saturday, 23 April 2011. What an Ice day. A VERY early wake-up (05:00hrs! Got me up and listening to the beautiful sounds of the dawn chorus. It seemed like every Blackbird. In Sussex had descended on our little corner of Seaford, the racket was that loud! There were also singing Goldcrest. And a veritable concert of Herring Gulls. Flying over last night to reinforce this view.). In the Cuckmere, waders were; two Bar-tailed Godwit. And a few Swallows.

We got excellent views of it and confidently identified it as a second-year bird. Now, we assumed this was the same bird seen to pass Selsey Bill earlier in the day. It took it about an hour and 10 minutes to travel from Selsey Bill to Splash Point, a reasonable time to be honest. Iceland Gulls- just like buses.

an amateur's garden

Monday, 25 April 2011. Mon 18th to Sun 24th April. A fairly interesting week for garden stuffs. Birdwise, all the expected songbirds have been around, including one of my favourites, Goldcrest. I have heard them singing and also heard the thin little alarm calls of these tiny little birds from the pine trees in opposite gardens. There is definitely a nest in there somewhere. Otherwise just very common birds, but hearing a dawn chorus of about 20 Blackbirds. Is nice no matter how common they may be! Anoth...
