A filling station gapes abandoned where the corner was,. Pump islands empty, windows absent, even the oil stains. Bleached to death by the sun. And the service bay,. Its door long gone, is host to trash and tumbleweeds. Huddled for comfort against the cinderblock back wall. Next door a café stands empty save for chairs and tables.

Disquieted. That it's a quarter to seven and it's still not dark in the west. Soon, of course, it will still be broad daylight at seven in the evening and again by five in the morning, but then there will be baseball and all will seem as it should.
