Gary's John o'Groats to Lands End Walk. The full story of my 2010 solo walk from John O'Groats to Lands End to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support. Monday, 30 August 2010. Day 11 Kingshouse to Tyndrum. Monday 30th August 2010. After The Bridge of Orchy, a scenic spot where I stopped for a cold drink, the path continues along the foot slopes of a mountain following the railway line until it reaches Tyndrum. Surely Tyndrum must be smallest town in the country to have two separate railway stations&...

Day 45 Harlyn to Newquay. Sunday 3rd October 2010. Considering the relatively low mileage today had been fairly tough, but highly exhilarating at the same time. I rate the scenery on the South West Coast Path as good as any other I've seen on the walk, The Highlands of Scotland included. Why some walkers choose to pass thr...Start...

Day 44 Bodmin to Harlyn. Saturday 2nd October 2010. Padstow was a wonderful little place. The harbour area is full of charm and character, I was very glad I'd decided to go out of my way a little and include it on my route. There were plenty of people in town and Rick Stein's famous fish n' chip shop had a queue out of t...We've...

My 1200 Mile Summer: June 2011

http://my1200milesummer.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

My 1200 Mile Summer. In the summer of 2011, I set off to walk the length of Great Britain from Land's End to John O'Groats. This is the story of my 3-month, 1200-mile journey through England, Wales and Scotland. The full story is best read chronologically, so I recommend either starting with the oldest posting in the archives section, or reading through the Book Preview in the sidebar. Walk completed August 28, 2011. Thursday, June 30, 2011. Day 30 - Hay-on-Wye to Kington 15 miles. River Wye from Hay.

Brian walking: April 2012

http://brianwalking.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 10 April 2012. Sykeside Camping Park - 22 to 26 March 12. What a lovely morning it is this morning; bright, pale blue sky, everything looking fresh after yesterday’s rain – the perfect morning for, well, lots of things but in my case perfect for planting another row of early potatoes. I dug a trench at the weekend, filled it with farmyard manure and left it open to soak up the rain. I can bury the spuds now. I was based at Sykeside Campsite. Links to this post. Brian walking: South West Coast Path - Day 8

http://brianwalking.blogspot.com/2014/05/south-west-coast-path-day-8.html

Sunday, 11 May 2014. South West Coast Path - Day 8. Sat 10 May - Woolacombe to Braunton. I'm carrying the AZ Adventure SWCP 1:25,000 OS Map which is a strip/booklet map. Book 1 covers Somerset and North Devon in a very handy size because it fits nicely in the smaller Ortlieb weatherproof holder. It's easier to turn pages on a wet and windy day (as it was at times today) than it is to refold a sheet map, and it's lighter too. Image: Looking back towards Woolacombe Sands - through the rain]. I have inspire...

Brian walking: South West Coast Path - Day 9

http://brianwalking.blogspot.com/2014/05/south-west-coast-path-day-9.html

Monday, 12 May 2014. South West Coast Path - Day 9. Sun 11 May - Braunton to Barnstaple. I could fill this page and more about them today. But I won't because there wouldn't be a kind word anywhere and it'll do no good. The five and a half mile route from. Braunton town centre to Barnstaple follows the former railway once used by the Atlantic Coast Express. I'm spending the day in Barnstaple where there is much to explore, eat and drink. There will be time to review my options. Sent from Samsung Mobile.

Brian walking: October 2011

http://brianwalking.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, 16 October 2011. Leeds and Liverpool Canal Path - After. Finding accommodation was critical on this walk because I wasn’t carrying a tent, sleeping bag, food and cooker. It did feel odd but marvellously light; my pack was a very comfortable 15lbs or so. Prize winning item was the Golite Dome Umbrella. Lightweight (215g), unbelievably strong (bendy) and in strong wind/driving rain it feels indestructible. A backpacker with an umbrella might seem out of place ( Hiram Holiday. Links to this post.

Brian walking: January 2014

http://brianwalking.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, 26 January 2014. Dreaming in Hayfield, High Peak. An aim this year is to walk a couple of long distance trails. But because I've become used to local strolls, preparation will have to include increasingly longer walks to improve fitness. Best get to it I thought. But at the same time, no need to overdo it. Break myself in gently perhaps. And why not begin by dreaming about what I aim to do - and do the hard part later. I have just spent a week in cosy Jumble Cottage. Links to this post. 2009 Jul ...

Brian walking: South West Coast Path - Day 2

http://brianwalking.blogspot.com/2014/05/south-west-coast-path-day-2.html

Tuesday, 6 May 2014. South West Coast Path - Day 2. Sun 4 May - Porlock to a field. It might seem odd that the first real contact with the sea when following this coastal path (unless toes were dipped at Minehead) is on the approach to Porlock Weir, where the path is in fact the pebble beach which leads into the hamlet. From there it feels like mostly upwards, through pleasant woodland and past sheep-filled fields. Many fields and lots of sheep. I found one lamb stuck up a tree! Mary had a little lamb,.

Brian walking: South West Coast Path - Day 6

http://brianwalking.blogspot.com/2014/05/south-west-coast-path-day-6.html

Friday, 9 May 2014. South West Coast Path - Day 6. Thu 8 May - Day Off. A wet and windy day in an English seaside town doesn't always present a pretty picture, in fact it can look quite miserable. But the sights weren't foremost on my mind today; I fancied a break from routine and my nagging left knee needed a rest, and Ilfracombe has provided both. Where transport connections seem favourable. Off I go then. Sent from Samsung Mobile. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Hiya - welcome to my blog. Three La...

Brian walking: December 2013

http://brianwalking.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Monday, 16 December 2013. I Started Another Blog Recently. If this blog is called Brian Walking then I could have called my new blog Brian Ranting, but I resisted the urge. But that is what I shall mostly do there - rant. Yet I’m keen to give credit where it’s due and hope to find cases to rave about rather than complain. It’s in my nature to resist the urge to be too hopeful on that count though. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). 2009 Jul - Cumbria Way.

You think I'm tired today, wait 'till you see me tomorrow. A Birthday Fit For A…3 Year Old? Sweet Boy turned 3 years old this past weekend! Wow I can’t believe it! I’ll write about his birth story at a later time because what I want to share with you is the incredibly awesome birthday party I threw for him. So this year I wasn’t holding back! Just like most 3 year old boys out there, Sweet Boy has a mild obsession with Thomas and Friends. You know, the TV show with trains that promote bad self esteem...

The Walking Monk

Friday, 14 August 2015. Monday, August 10th, 2015. Monday, August 10th, 2015. Fresh Rain / Clear Mind. My only fear is traffic when I am walking about. Even responsible motorists are to be feared because of their speed. I had graced my torso with my Terry Fox t-shirt. He's an inspiration. He would be 57 by now, with his birthday just having passed by in July. People will remember him for his heroic run on one real leg, the other artificial. People remember him as a youth - a mature one. Artists, whether ...
