But everything is what you make of it right? It was a beautiful day, and I was with a group of amazing. and rather silly. women. We took pictures among the roses, in the Japanese gardens with cool trees, on the rocks through a pond as frogs, in the majestic lawns pretending to be fancy statues. I was surprised when I realized I was having fun. My knowledge of flowers and the like is startlingly low. Anyways, Mr. Butchart also had an interest in collecting birds and had an interesting array of duc...One r...

I was told to do the Painted Canyon/Ladder Canyon Hike by a friend back home, so I had to check it out. And I am sure glad I did! What begins (see above) as a wide sandy path through the canyon turns sharply into a clausterphobics nightmare. The walls close in, sometimes to the point where you have to put one foot directly in front of the other and not beside, and you start to ascend a series of ladders up the steep canyon walls. It is magnificent! Http:/ www.hiking-in-ps.com/meccahills.php. Well I am no...

San Diego: "A Very Good Enclosed Port" -

San Diego: "A Very Good Enclosed Port". When Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo arrived in what is now San Diego Bay back in 1542 he called the place "A Very Good Enclosed Port." Glad that name didn't stick, what a mouthful that would be! His ship continued up the coast somewhere into Oregon but Cabrillo died along the way. As the first European (Spanish) explorer to the coast of California he was a pretty big deal and the tip of Point Loma became the Cabrillo National Monument. After spending a couple hours explor...

I have no idea what this is going to end up looking like as I am writing my first ever post on my IPad. I've been in Victoria for the last few days and have not had Internet access. We are now in Starbucks reconnecting to the online world. There is the best breakfast place I have ever been to (and I have been to a lot! In Victoria. The Blue Fox. Even at 1pm on a weekday there is a 45 minute wait for a table. But it is totally worth it. The ride was surprisingly difficult - there were 13 (! Small (ish) cl...

Not even 20 minutes from Squamish is the trailhead to Elfin Lakes. This 11km trail gains 2,000 feet of elevation through Garibaldi Provincial Park - half of it through the forest and half through Alpine meadows. think Heidi and the Sound of Music. I swear I could have been in the Alps. We hiked back to the hut - jumped into the glacier cold lake, and cooked ourselves the most delicious steak and potato dinner. Sonia even had a glass of red wine. We sat on the porch and played crib watching the su...So yo...

Found myself the most wonderful park - miles and miles of trails just waiting to be explored! I have been to Gowlland Tod Park twice now, and still feels like completely unchartered territory. My first adventure is one I plan to take all future visitors to - it is just a short walk, maybe a couple of kilometers through the woods, to the Tod Inlet. There is the most picturesque yacht moored in the inlet amongst the fog. I mean seriously just look at it - its like out of a postcard or something. It was jus...

Have you seen the movie Guilt Trip? There is a scene where they stop at the Grand Canyon, and they wonder how long they should look at it before it is ok to move on. that is about how I felt. The Grand Canyon is considered one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. When I heard this I wondered what the others were - so if you are like me, here you go:. Harbor of Rio de Janeiro. Aurora Borealis (I can cross another off the list! Paricutin volcano (in Mexico). Visit my new blog here!

Have you ever played video games and realized that you haven't blinked for the last 10 minutes? Although the Santa Monica Mountains offered enough hikes to keep me blissfully entertained for weeks, I only did one more trail - Escondido Falls. It was one of the first moments I really, really wished I had someone there with me. I had another moment of longing for a companion earlier this morning when I was reading about the abundance of ticks in this area (active October to March . right now!
