Wednesday, 17 August 2011. Benriach dark rum 15 (46%). BenRiach Dark Rum 15 (46%). I'm a fan of BenRiach, but I remember trying this one before and not being too thrilled. Rum finishes are hit or miss for me. We'll have to see how this one does this time around. BenRiach comes across as one of the mom and pop shops. Molasses. Toffee. The standard offering from Highland Park in the Orkney Islands (the northern most distillery in Scotland), this 12 year old represents a choice for budget-minded enthusiasts. Price aside, how will it hold up? Honey and Smoke, though very subtle. Subtle in a good way. This is one to appreciate awhile. Tame, but not underwhelming at all. Type of expression. Saturday, 10 September 2011. Balvenie portwood 21 (40%). Balvenie PortWood 21 (40%). Vanilla, cane sugar, red berries (though I'm not sure what kind), Christmas pudding. I guarantee you this is what Santa Claus smells like. After a night at the whisky bar. This whisky tastes like awesome. Ripe raisin, white grapes, strawberry fudge. Delicate. Although I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a first time whisky for budding enthusiasts or casual tasters alike, a'bunadh happens to be the first bottle of single malt Scotch whisky I ever purchased for myself years ago (Batch No20). Why wouldn't I recommend it as a first single malt? It's a beast, and I mean that in a good way. But it's a bit overwhelming to those new to single malts. And it let's you down at the end...
