Opal Creek Wilderness – The Wilds Project
http://www.thewildsproject.com/opal-creek-wilderness01
Resolved to hike 450 miles in 50 Oregon wilderness areas by 2016. Middot; March 6, 2015. The first time I visited Opal Creek Wilderness, it was on a rainy, soggy winter day. By the time I returned to the trail head after a 7-mile hike, my iPhone and camera had stopped working due to the humidity, yet I was all smiles. Why? Despite the damaged electronics, my soul was recharged and I felt blissful for being able to experience such a magical place! Here’s the GPS track from the hike for this project ...

Resolved to hike 450 miles in 50 Oregon wilderness areas by 2016. A Spider’s Hidden Egg Sac. Middot; April 28, 2015. I’m not sure what made me stop to examine this leaf dangling from a branch. Maybe it was how it was attached or the unusual shape of the dried leaf. Or maybe because there were two of them within 12 inches of each other. Whatever the reason, I’m glad I stopped to investigate. Ruler in photo below shows millimeters. My thanks to Charley Eiseman. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. On Opal Creek Wil...

Resolved to hike 450 miles in 50 Oregon wilderness areas by 2016. Middot; March 3, 2015. What a major BLUNDER. I just found out tonight, two weeks after the fact, that my hike into the Middle Santiam Wilderness didn’t actually make it into the Middle Santiam Wilderness! The more I think about this idiotic mistake, the more I’m actually happy about it. It means that I now need to return again this year – and sooner than later. I was worried that I wouldn’t be back until 2016, aft...You may also like.

On New Year’s Day | dharmatrails

March 1, 2015. On New Year’s Day. And thusly my year-round project of digging up sod came to an untimely end last winter. I will be trying my best to balance between yard and trail this year, but my obsessive nature (feed the bees and butterflies) will probably swing more towards the yard again in 2015, at least until the grass is gone and more native and pollinator friendly flowers and shrubs have gone into the yard. After a few days in the teens or below, a day in the upper 20s seems downright balmy...

Monthly Archives: March 2015. March 1, 2015. Reminiscence – Comfort Hike. For many years my favorite spot was a bit of an in between trail. Part of longer loops, but also, for some reason, a trail that was never glamorous or had the reputation that other nearby trails had. Eventually dropped from hiking guides. Which, of course, became part of the attraction for me and my solitude seeking self. Sunset from Horseshoe Ridge. Sound of silence at sunset. Moonrise over Mt Hood. In fall, high meadows of deep c...

Monthly Archives: June 2014. June 29, 2014. Tales of Twin Pillars. Heading back up the Ochoco’s to visit the upper trailhead to Twin Pillars trail. How close was I to the trailhead when the road was blocked by snow in early May? Less than two miles, it seems. So close I could taste the trail, if I decided for some odd reason to eat the trailhead. Today’s motto: Eat the Trailhead! Hundreds of wild strawberries line the trail, their ground-hugging white flowers in bloom. Tiny purple violets, occasional...

Monthly Archives: May 2014. May 11, 2014. If at first…. The previous weekend I had headed out to find a new hiking trail, only to be turned away short miles from the trailhead by an unexpectedly snowed in roadway. So close, so far… Flash forward to the next weekend, and I am boldly heading into the Ochoco’s again! Once more into the mountains! From the trailhead, and a short switch back later, I come to my first meadow wildflowers! Leaving the trailhead, I drive to the Stein’s Pillar viewpoint in the val...

Passing the Pacific Crest Trail, and a small group of hikers, the landscape opens into dun fields of spent grass. Fall sunshine pours onto the surface of Sister’s Mirror lake. Deep blue now, both above and below. High lake solitude sunshine silence abounds. Yes I can attest this to be true as I scramble through a maze of woody debris. My shirt off, sitting lakeside in the peaceful sunshine! I sit alone, absorbing.

March 1, 2015. A Horse Ridge Winter’s Afternoon. Dead silent on the ridge top, except for an early fly buzzing by. No bikers, no hikers, well met on the way down. Blue sky, late westering sunshine over Newberry Crater, filling the horizon. Juniper pollen! Oh yes, near 60, today! Trail dry. No snow. No bird song. No whispering breezes. Blueness, stillness, sunness. Green/gold azure contrasts below deep blue skies surround me. Perhaps. I stand still, facing skyward, absorbing distant D, soaking in a ca...

Monthly Archives: February 2014. February 24, 2014. Summer Day Thoughts – Reminiscence; Catherine Creek, 8.3.2012. On a scorching August day I arrived to find that I’m the only car in the parking lot, but it is one of those summer days where I simply cannot stay in town and I must get outdoors.
