The Wind in our Wheels

The Wind in our Wheels. Tuesday, 28 July 2015. Latacunga to Cotopaxi National Park. We decided to try and avoid the busy roads and found ourselves on a lovely quiet backroad which went through the town of Mulalo to the South entrance of the Cotopaxi National Park. Our cozy campsite for the next 3 nights. Cotopaxi in the background. Cooking up eggs for dinner and lunches. Look what we woke to! The first car we flagged down stopped and we jump on the back. It was invigourating! What a view and what a day!

The Wind in our Wheels: February 2015

http://www.thewindinourwheels.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

The Wind in our Wheels. Tuesday, 24 February 2015. The moment of truth - day one. Wow awoke to snow on the hills after a night of heavy rain and strong winds have packed the bikes and man they look heavy. Here's hoping we can ride then. Just feeding up on eggs and cornflakes before we head off on our first day of this adventure. Tolhuin here we come. Labels: Cycling in South America 2015. Monday, 23 February 2015. The Wind in our Wheels. Thursday, 16 July 2015. The Spondylus highway - Guayaquil to Puntoviejo. Cycling the Spondylus highway. We were itching to get onto our bikes again after a fantastic 10 days in the Galapagos Islands. We passed a lot of people out on the cycle path - it felt good to see local Ecuadorians out enjoying their own country. After our morning tea, Toni from Guayaquil pulled up along side us. He was keen to talk but his conversation starter was a bit odd. ´how old are you? We later took a...

The Wind in our Wheels. Tuesday, 28 July 2015. Latacunga to Puyo via Banos. After a lazy morning and a large American breakfast, we headed out of Latacunga and into the drizzle. Our destination for the day was Banos. We had left most of our gear in our hostel in Latacunga and we were looking forward to a day of cycling with almost no gear. We had researched the route the night before and were pretty confident in our ability to find some nice back roads and avoid the busy panamerican to Banos. Finally the...

The Wind in our Wheels: May 2015

http://www.thewindinourwheels.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

The Wind in our Wheels. Sunday, 24 May 2015. We enjoyed a relaxed morning in this very nice city (of Peruvian standards). It has many churches and beautiful old buildings similar to Cuzco but without the hassling from tourism operators and manic traffic. We had a coffee and lemon meringe pie at the town square while we treated our Brooks saddles to a clean and polish from the shoe shiner! Our view from the caves. How do things like this ever happen? Needless to say we rolled into Mayocc by 4pm and checke...

The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Category Archives: Country reflections. Reflections on our first country: Canada. We have been on the road now for more than two months, so a moment for summary and reflection is certainly warranted. Of course, it is particularly apt since we just left Canada for the final time on this trip, bringing to a close our time visiting with our northern neighbors. Below I summarize some of our challenges, joys, and highlights. Distance between grocery stores. Actuall...

The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? One week ago we entered our eighth country: Ecuador. It then proceeded to pour rain for the next week. Charmed as we were by the lush jungle, new architecture, and very nicely painted churches, it has been a tough week. We are now resting in the colonial city of Cuenca in the Ecuadorian Andes, where it has finally (! Stopped raining for a bit. Waiting at immigration…. Wait for me there! First view of Ecuador, across the river. The church in a teeny town. At le...

The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Taking a “gap year”. It was back in 2012 when we first considered the idea of taking a “gap year.” We read an article in the April edition of. Magazine called A Two-Wheeled Gap Year for Grown Ups. By Amaya Williams. Not-so incidentally, I just looked her up and found out she is still on her quest to cycle every country. The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Canyons, mountains, heat, and altitude. Upscale eatery in Huaraz. It was so fun to meet friends for lunch! One last glimpse of the snow as we leave Huaraz. Our route from Huaraz took us from 10,000′ all the way down to 1,000′ over 3 days. You are probably wondering why it would take us 3 days, it was all downhill after all! The Canyon del Pato begins. It is dark in here! Finally opning up again, on a nasty bumpy dirt road. We started way down there at the river.

The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Huancavelica to Huaraz – still more mountains. There are glaciers here, and huge, beautiful peaks all around us. It is definitely not what one expects to see when they think of the tropics. Now, a few tidbits about what it took to get here. Jason is happy to be back on the bike. On the first climb leaving Huancavelica. Some ladies take Jason to their tiny store for soda. Mountaintop farms and cemetery. This doggy was my favorite. Note amused dude in background.

The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Leaving the altiplano and entering Peru. This past week we’ve been moving quickly towards Cusco. We had an exiting exit from La Paz, a beautiful ride along Lake Titicaca, and have entered our 7th country: Peru! Country number 7: Peru! After taking a day to let our legs recover from our hike, we got up very early to leave La Paz before traffic picked up. Unfortunately, Daisy got a flat tire 3 blocks down the street! The mountain EnChantingwind - after you are gone

Thursday, August 1, 2013. The valley of my mountain was in the deep mist this morning. I wasn’t in the mood for going out and taking photos of the beauty. Instead, laying in the bed, listening to the rain drops falling on the roof…. I hear, you laying by me, whispering into my ear “Good morning”…, cried in thinking that you are now in the world that is so far so different from mine…. I am going to R&C’s party tonight,. And will have a cup of coffee with A&JC at their house tomorrow morning,.
