Published on July 16, 2015. Why I Love Milk Paint (No Poems This Time). Written by Brian Clites. For those of you who may have been dismayed by my love poem to Milk Paint, here is a more straightfoward list of the reasons why MP is one of the best finishes a furniture builder can use:. Milk Paint is completely non-toxic. Milk Paint has Zero VOC’s. Scared of cancer or birth defects? But good luck avoiding all of the products we use in everyday life that have earned a prop 65 label! Over the next five years, I am embarking on a radical experiment: to build every piece of furniture my family needs. By 2020, I hope to have sold or given away every piece of store-bought wood (and wood-like products) that we have ever purchased, some of which is perfectly nice stuff. My goal is to estrange myself from the Ikeafication of the world. To turn away from the consumptive (and environmentally disastrous) norm of mass-produced furniture, wherein the objects that de fine the. August 24, 2015.

Published by Brian Clites. My wife and I met as graduate students on the south side of Chicago. In 2007, we moved into our first appartment together. It had a bed room, a living room, a galley kitchen, two bathrooms, and zero closets. To create storage for all our larger belongings, I constructed two simple shelving units inside the extra bathroom. One set of shelves was scaffolded atop the bath tub basin; the second set was built above and around the sink and the comode. To our newly-wed eyes, those com...

By Denise Gaul – virtual apprentice. The Virtual Apprentice Goes to School. March 23, 2015. May 8, 2015. Well, it’s taken me a bit longer than I expected to write my second blog, but better a late second than no second entry. Having spent an inordinate amount of time watching “how to” videos and combing the internet for inspiration, I knew I needed something to help me shift my time from observing to making. I’m fortunate to live near Red Rocks School of Fine Woodworking and Luth. Fantastic second post D...
Mulesaw: Treasure chest with curved lid part 8, assembly
http://mulesaw.blogspot.com/2015/07/treasure-chest-with-curved-lid-part-8.html
Being old fashioned, the cool way. Sunday, July 19, 2015. Treasure chest with curved lid part 8, assembly. After I had glued up the lid, I cut the ends of so they were level with the sides. Then I started rounding over the outside of the lid using a plane. I took a break from the free hand planing, and decided to glue up the lower part of the chest. This went conspicuously smooth. Even the diagonal measurements were spot on. Next task was to fit a striking plate in the lid. I marked out the position ...

Being old fashioned, the cool way. Tuesday, December 9, 2014. The title may be a bit misleading, because it is not about tools used to build maritime stuff, rather than tools I have used the past year for hobby woodworking on a ship. As some of you may remember, I made a tool chest for the sea last year. During the last year I have built a couple of projects using the tool kit, so I feel that I can give an honest review of it. Cabinet with many drawers. A carved name sign. Fairy tale princess bed. The to...

Mulesaw: Treasure chest with curved lid part 3 dovetails and glueing up the bottom.

Being old fashioned, the cool way. Sunday, July 5, 2015. Treasure chest with curved lid part 3 dovetails and glueing up the bottom. Today I chopped the dovetails of the four corners of the chest. A benefit of using spruce is that you can make the dovetails really tight since the wood compresses very well. This time I made the tails first like at home, and I do find that I am able to make nicer dovetails that way compared to when I make them pins first. I found some more spruce that could be glued up to f...

Being old fashioned, the cool way. Saturday, May 30, 2015. Canvas tool roll for regular chisels 2. After sewing on the two major parts that will form the base for the individual pockets, I laid out the sizes of each individual pocket. I graduated the pockets in size, so the narrowest one is approximately 3/8" wide and the widest one is a full 2". Off course it is possible to put a narrow chisel in a wide pocket, but if the size fits - the chisel won't shift around, and it looks better in my opinion.

Vintage Tools and Cabinetmaking. March 8, 2015. March 28, 2015. Slow progress I know…have been debating back and forth on the tool rack at the front of the chest. Have decided on a simple rack using some walnut scraps and pine strips. I cut some walnut and sketched a curve I was happy with, then cut a couple of notches on the top with my radial arm saw and dado blade to hold the pine strips:.
