Journeys into the Contemplative Life
Holding out the Lantern | The Work of Formation
https://theworkofformation.wordpress.com/2013/02/07/holding-out-the-lantern
The Work of Formation. Journeys into the Contemplative Life. Holding out the Lantern. By Lisa on February 7, 2013. On Friday afternoon my husband received a phone call he had been waiting expectantly for. It was a job offer from a hospital in a town about 40 minutes from our home. It was a good offer. It was a good job. It was a great opportunity to continue doing what he does so well. Where do I go from here with the limitations I had? Limitations of kids schedules and limitations of a blank resume.

The Work of Formation. Journeys into the Contemplative Life. For Those That Are Sure. By Lisa on January 14, 2013. Last night was a long one. The kids slept well. Drew was still in the bed beside me. But I tossed and turned myself into complete exhaustion. My mind wouldn’t shut down, it took me on a ride that I was begging to get off of. My thoughts swirled as I attempted to just let them go. (Or walk them to the door laughing- as Sister Marci taught us.). How do you know you have the answers? Now we see...

The Work of Formation. Journeys into the Contemplative Life. The chaos isn’t going anywhere. By Brian Miller on January 29, 2014. Why don’t you take off your coat and stay awhile? I couldn’t get my friend’s words out of my mind. I had been in my new home for four months and still my walls were bare. It was time. How is it possible,. I wondered, to go back and forth so quickly from joy and satisfaction to frustration and fatigue? I startled and jumped to my feet, dashing across the room to discover that o...
Moving toward Jesus | The Work of Formation

The Work of Formation. Journeys into the Contemplative Life. By Brian Miller on March 17, 2014. March 16, 2014. I had coffee with a couple pastor friends this week. We were talking about the state of the church. I want to share with you a bit of what ended up on a napkin during that conversation. I want to propose to you this morning that as I read the gospels, this is where I see Jesus (write on the Open side of this axis). It is what we see in the story of Nicodemus. Jesus calls them out as those who c...

Creativity and possibility in small congregations. On the Slow Side. July 30, 2014. If we are to retreat in daily life, we also need to slow down. I had an opportunity to slow down today. A walk turned into a moment of reflection by the creek. I noticed elements of nature that I miss when I’m riding my bike here or when I’m just too busy to even stop by. Within this creek, the central feature of our region and the subject of a Hall and Oates song. On the slow side I notice. Newer post →. July 30, 2014.

Creativity and possibility in small congregations. Husband. father. Mennonite pastor. seminary student. cancer survivor. baseball fanatic. December 3, 2014. 1 O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence 2 as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! Creativity and possibility in small congregations. On Joy July 2014. July 11, 2014. Back to the joy theme. Do we have enough of it in our current Anabaptist/Mennonite spirituality? Today I read a fascinating account of a Catholic person using the ANABAPTIST PRAYERBOOK, TAKE OUR MOMENTS AND OUR DAYS, as an experiment in a class at a Catholic school. This prayerbook was produced recently by several faculty and staff at the Mennonite seminary in Elkhart, Indiana. His account is at the link below:. So he say...

Creativity and possibility in small congregations. August 25, 2014. That’s why this sermon from the Canadian Mennonite Assembly this past July was so important to me. The preacher, Betty Pries, was calling the whole church to contemplation. She quoted this phrase: I have spent time in the womb of the divine. Newer post →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Joy | formation:community

Creativity and possibility in small congregations. June 20, 2014. I keep in touch with Ireland, the country where I spent twelve formative years, in any way I can. This week I read an interesting article. I lingered with the words my joy lectio divina-style, just letting them shimmer awhile. My joy.my joy I noticed these words, too Made complete made complete in themselves. What does that mean? Sacred Space, The Prayer Book 2014. Says the words for joy occur 335 times in the Bible. I’ve been on a que...

Like flotsam and jetsam. I get pulled into currents. Of action and reaction. Scripture: Luke 1:39-55 (Advent 2). During a retreat at Pendle Hill several weeks ago, I encountered Jane Hirshfield’s poem, Three Times My Life Has Opened. We were invited to sit with the poem, to reflect and journal about. Read more.
