The Book Lantern: June 2014
http://www.thebooklantern.co.uk/2014_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, June 11, 2014. The Crow Road and the Subject of Framing. Content warning: discussion of death and religion. Also, references to a corpse blowing up due to poor medical practice. Iain Banks was one of those authors who, like Siobhan Dowd, I wish Id discovered earlier, if only to hope I could one day meet them and shake their hand. As it is, Im left with the legacy of their work to peruse and marvel at. Long-time readers of this blog will remember Ceilidhs heartfelt tribute. Links to this post.

Opalescent Essence: January 2012
http://opalescent-essence.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Musings on reading and writing. Tuesday, January 17, 2012. Post, my life has changed pretty radically recently! I am enthralled by my adorable baby girl, Aria. But even she can't keep me from reading. I've managed to read a few books so far, including the moving Truth and Beauty. Which I thought I had read already but apparently hadn't. Now I'm in the midst of 1Q84. Happily loaded on my new e-reader so I don't have to balance its bulk with a 2-month-old baby in the other arm), as well as Momma Zen. HISTO...

Opalescent Essence: July 2012
http://opalescent-essence.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Musings on reading and writing. Sunday, July 29, 2012. It can be done, even with baby. Happily, even with an eight-month-old skootching around the house, I am able to get more reading done than just Caps for Sale. I just haven't had time to write about it! Here's a quick run-down of some recent books I've enjoyed (and one I didn't). What the Dead Know. I didn't find the end very surprising, but it was a gripping read nonetheless. I'm not usually a quitter when it comes to books. I tend to push throug...

Opalescent Essence: Bring Up the Bodies, by Hilary Mantel
http://opalescent-essence.blogspot.com/2012/12/bring-up-bodies-by-hilary-mantel.html
Musings on reading and writing. Thursday, December 13, 2012. Bring Up the Bodies, by Hilary Mantel. When death is a foregone conclusion, when one is merely counting the meals, minutes, and breaths before dying, what does it mean to be alive? We know from the start of Bring Up the Bodies. Mantel brings Cromwell into focus with deft skill and heart. He is a bold, ambitious man who dares to bring down queens, but he loves his son and his friends, and offers mercy where he can. As in Wolf Hall.

http://www.thebooklantern.co.uk/2014_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 24, 2014. Sever: A weird finish. Caught me by surprise. Fever. Added to that surprise. I liked both books with some caveats, but overall I enjoyed them more than I didnt. I dont know what to think about Sever. On the other. oh, dear. Lets just say that maybe the ending was a bit too much. Short review: its an okay ending, but not overwhelming. . Long review contains spoilers. Links to this post. 2014 prequels and sequels challenge. Friday, May 23, 2014. We need to talk about "Fangirl".
