The Writing Room

Sunday, April 17, 2005. I have been remiss in my updates lately. Work has intruded, and with only a little more than a month until summer break, I have to acknowledge and bow to Work's demands. But I want to offer something here, some gesture of good will and the reassurance that I am indeed coming back- eventually. Lately, I've found myself rereading old, beloved books. This weekend I read one of my favorites from high school- Illusions. And now I've begun to reread Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird. I encoura...

The Writing Room

http://thewritingroom.blogspot.com/2005_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 28, 2005. From best to worst. For this prompt I'm taking a tip from NaNoWriMo. Founder, Chris Baty. I've been reading his hip, funny new book, No Plot? And slowly planning my foray into novel writing. I'm not sure if I'm up to the 30 day challenge of NaNoWriMo, but I did really enjoy the following activity Baty shares in his book. Baty suggests that, before you begin your novel writing adventure, you make two lists:. What, to you, makes a good novel? Posted by lit lover at 8:32 AM. And t...

The Writing Room

http://thewritingroom.blogspot.com/2005/03/100-words.html

Monday, March 28, 2005. Often my students complain that they cannot possibly write enough to meet my expectations. The mere idea of composing 500, or even worse (gasp! 1,000 words is more than their little brains can comprehend. Construct a paragraph- any kind of paragraph, descriptive, narrative, expository- but use only 100 words. No more, no less. Go. Posted by lit lover at 5:56 PM. Its all in who you know. Trash to treasure, part deux. Trash to treasure, part one. Burn, baby, burn.

Friday, April 08, 2005. Love from A to Z. If you've never explored The Alchera Project. I encourage you to surf your way over and take a look. Each month, the site owner provides a number of interesting writing prompts that address a variety of writerly skills- poetry, fiction, freewriting, and even list-making. I've been a lurker on the site for quite some time, but this will be my first foray into actually completing (and posting) one of its projects. The topic (direct from Alchera):.

The Writing Room

http://thewritingroom.blogspot.com/2005/03/one-little-word.html

Wednesday, March 09, 2005. Okay, I'm tired and not feeling too creative, so this one's an oldie but goody. I can't give credit because I've seen this prompt too many times, in too many different places. It's practically a cliche, but then, like all good cliches, it became one because it worked. Grab a book off your shelf, desk, etc. Any book will do. Don't spend any time at all choosing- the one closest to your fingers is the right one for this job. Posted by lit lover at 7:38 PM. Burn, baby, burn.

The Writing Room

Wednesday, April 06, 2005. Sneaking up on yourself. In One Continuous Mistake. Gail Sher recommends experimenting with when. You write by trying out writing at unusual times or in unusual places. A few places I've written (some unusual, some not so much):. In the car while I was driving. Okay, while I was stopped in traffic). In the shower (you'll just have to trust me on this one). In mall food courts (one of my favorites). In the middle of the night (sometimes without turning on the light).

lit lover: December 2004

http://lit-lover.blogspot.com/2004_12_01_archive.html

Reflections of an ever-evolving educator. Saturday, December 11, 2004. I can't believe I just spent the last 5 hours writing my final exam. What's REALLY sad about that is that I didn't even WRITE most of it- I simply tweaked questions that came with our textbook materials. Out of 120 questions, I might have authored about 25. Most of the time was spent rearranging, formatting, double-checking for accuracy- I'm just so glad it's finally done. It's almost over- for now. Posted by lit lover @ 4:11 PM.

Anxious for clarification, hopeful that we would hear something positive and that Mom wouldn't be facing another round of chemo. So why do I still feel scared? Is that ungrateful of me? Better. For now. Monday, March 21, 2005.

Reflections of an ever-evolving educator. Wednesday, September 29, 2004. Back to back to back. My planning is almost over and the day will jump into full swing. I have lunch duty today and am just finishing monitoring a standardized test during my planning. Reflections of an ever-evolving educator. Monday, January 24, 2005. I've been so swamped that I neglected to write about my Friday morning last week. I need to write about it because I really need to remember it. Always. Friday morning, one of my colleagues (and a friend as well) called in sick. No sub was immediately available to cover her first period class, so, naturally, I stepped in, being the only one available with first period planning. No biggie, right? A chorus of agreement ripples across the r...

Eat My Shorts | Short Stories for Bored People

Short Stories for Bored People. June 25, 2016. That Time at Frog Pond Lake. It happened to a friend of a friend of mine. Whatever, the place still gives me the heebies. Still, it’s better than a run-in with Perc the Jerk. The lake was still as I hurried past, and from a distance I could see the glow of the candle Mom had put in the window for Samhain. I felt comforted just then, and ran the rest of the way until I reached the front door. Okay, okay, I’ll hang them up! To be continued…. June 11, 2015.
