The Moms Meet | A Seoulful Year

https://theyearinseoul.wordpress.com/2015/01/17/the-moms-meet

Sharing our experiences living, teaching, and learning in Seoul, South Korea. Preparing for our adventure. A few months ago, around Christmas time, I got to witness something very special; Mike’s Korean mom and his American mom met for the first time in Korea. It’s funny because, we had it all planned, and it was supposed to be this big dramatic moment. In reality, it was a very normal low-key kind of thing. Where was my camera? The first meeting: Mike’s moms, Mike, and Korean aunt. Lunch was a seafood-s...

My first half-marathon! | A Seoulful Year

https://theyearinseoul.wordpress.com/2014/12/01/my-first-half-marathon

Sharing our experiences living, teaching, and learning in Seoul, South Korea. Preparing for our adventure. Before the race near Gwanghwamun Square. Whoa I ran my first half marathon! With only three weeks before the race I trained like a maniac. I found it funny that some of the 10k runners were smoking and eating cup ramen and chicken right before the race. The mood already felt celebratory. Twenty minutes before the start we stretched a bit and got in line. It was crazy crowded and LOUD. I’m happy to s...

do re mi fa SEOUL: June 2011

http://doremifa-seoul.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 27, 2011. I'm getting really frustrated with how little I've progressed with Korean. I might have said this earlier, but in my Korean class, we burn through chapters in something like 2 days, which means grammar points have just been flung at me, and while that in and of itself isn't difficult during class, it's a completely different thing once I'm in a situation where I need to use it. I realized yesterday that I haven't actually put together Korean sentences. This is not okay. Incidently,...

Friday, September 30, 2011. Seoul Snapshot #4: Sunrise. As the days grow shorter, my 5:30am rising is met with daybreak. I never quite appreciate sunrises as much as I do sunsets- because as a west coast girl myself, sunsets over the pacific were just stunning- but that doesn't mean they are any less lovely. From my apartment window, 5:30am. Labels: Im in Korea bitch. Thursday, September 29, 2011. Meeting Mr. Ideal. I recently acquired a new language exchange partner. A new one, you ask. Another one?

http://doremifa-seoul.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 30, 2011. I recently complete a supposed 15 hour Pre-Orientation course in preparation for Korea. The biggest chunk of it is psychology, methodology, and pedagogy, but there's a few lessons on Korean culture as well. Anyway, as I'm worked through the pre-orientation course, the reality of my whole situation started to feel just that much more: in about a month I'll be standing in front of a classroom in a completely different country with kids (? Whose first language is different than mine.

World Peace Begins in the Back Seat. Essays and reflections of a girl…. Just Another Day in the Neighborhood. Battling These Demons (It’s Not What You Think). Out with the old and in with the new…except, I really liked the old! Would You Call Me Cliche If I Told You There was a Miracle Growing Inside of Me? June 30, 2013. Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Heart, Mind, and Seoul: Sucker Punched. Since my last real post, major events have shaken me and I just needed some time to sort through my life, my thoughts, my anxieties. And to think about my options and whatever future I may have here in Korea. I am a high school NET. My contract ends in february. I will not be allowed to teach at my school next year. Neither will I be replaced by another NET. It was, and remains, such a blow. Like I was sucker punched in the gut. If I de...

Monday, May 30, 2011. Heart, Mind, and Seoul: 100 Days. After 3 months of officially living in Korea, a day that was commemorated by a bungee jump, I can actually say that I've built the foundation of a life here. Things are more familiar, I have daily/weekly routines, I can navigate the subways without a map, I get suggest areas for sightseeing/shopping/eating. What else can I experience to make myself feel that newness- that fresh excitement- that I once felt when I first came to this amazing country?

Thursday, July 28, 2011. Things to do, Places to See. This summer, instead of going out of Korea for vacation (I KNOW *facepalm*) I'm making the most of my 10ish days and venturing the hell out of Seoul to get more intimate with the rest of South korea. Heading to the DMZ, visiting beaches/caves, an ancient temple, a palace, and even green tea fields :D. Now if only the weather would cooperate! Gyeongju National Park/ Anapji (via jason teale, National Geographic). Boseong Green Tea Fields. I'm not saying...

Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Just a really quick update. 2) I'm in Seoul! 3) It's freaking cold here. its the kind of cold that makes you breathless in a moment and seeps into your bones and settles in there. 6) When we arrived they gave us all like gift bags which included water and some food (custard buns, ftw! Clementines, my go to travel snack! Yummmyyy), an EPIK sweatshirt, alarm clock that I can't seem to work, an adapter, a EPIK towel, a map, some guidebooks/workbooks for our seminars. My room lo...

http://doremifa-seoul.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 31, 2011. In my feverish attempt at making my life in Korea actually mean something, damn it, I joined a bunch of clubs and activities a few weeks ago. This included joining a book club. Now, the very idea of a book club is something that is extremely appealing to me. It's the picture of smarty-arty pants sitting around in a well lit room sipping tea and discussing what. Matters. It's quaint. It's cute. It's novel. Or worse, not let me have a voice. I came into the meeting with my usual...

Off The Grid | Making Sense of the Senseless

Making Sense of the Senseless. January 2, 2013. At the beginning of 2013, I weigh less than I did at the beginning of 2012. The trend line in my Calorie Count database says the trend is losing. But if you look at the last 6 weeks, I am gaining weight. So am I losing or not? Life is a series of win and loses. The stock market is a prime example. Those peaks and valleys would give a roller coaster enthusiast hesitation. The first day it was different…. December 31, 2012. So the first day we different, exce...

The Year in Two Voices

The Year in Two Voices. Friday, December 5, 2014. Life as an ice rink:. Falling down and getting up. Bruising our knees then gliding. Bumping into people we don't know. And people we do,. Moving faster and faster. As long as we can. Circling, ever circling-. Like beads of sweat. Thursday, December 4, 2014. One by one they go. Clinging to love or bitterness. Or something in between,. Leaving the rest of us. But to raise our arms. We use the example. Of the empty egg shell. Left inside the nest;. Can't be ...
