The Thinking Library

Friday, April 8, 2011. Freegal and the new "ownership". I just got off the phone with Freegal representatives after a lengthy discussion about how I believe that Freegal isn’t a sustainable model for libraries. Even more, I think it’s probably detrimental to libraries in the long run. I understand that serving up downloadable content through Freegal is making our patrons excited – who wouldn’t be? Italicized portions from (Kelly, 2011b), read the full article here. The state librarian of Kansas is playing country hardball with ebook vendor OverDrive, rejecting contract renewal proposals that, in one case, would have increased administrative fees nearly 700 percent by 2014…. Instead of finding things, how about doing things? How about creating localized collections of our most unique stuff and, more importantly, helping our library users to do the same? And our attempts providing econtent thus far have only been so-so. And yet the profession doesn’t seem to be taking notice of the ch...

Blood on the Lintels. Because "Blood on the Lentils" is funny only to me. To the driver (part 2) . Of the hearse with Elkhart license plate 736UN, beside whom I parked tonight in the Martin's parking lot, and who waggishly propped in the window of said hearse a mask of an obviously older woman wearing sunglasses: well-played. Blood on the Lintels. Because "Blood on the Lentils" is funny only to me. HP 2035, HP 1020, Windows 7 64-bit, printing problem. For future reference, this is how I got a balky HP 2035 to (finally) print from Windows 64-bit, both by USB connection on a local machine and through a network connection. Frankly, it shouldn't be so hard. Delete every HP printer from the system. Restart the print spooler. Go into the Print Server properties and delete every HP driver in its entirety. Install the other printers.

Goat in the Stacks. Book Review: CITY OF BONES by Cassandra Clare. June 23, 2011 · 9:17 am. Kansas Library to swtich to 3M – Another Litmus Test for E-content provision. As discussed previously on this blog. The struggle for KS libraries (and many others) has been that OverDrive is really the only game in town, making substantive negotiation difficult. That was until 3M decided to jump into the market with a new EBook Lending service (see details here. The implications here are huge. The entire ebook...

Goat in the Stacks. Re: Freegal and the new “ownership”. Book Review: HUNGER by Jackie Kessler →. April 26, 2011 · 10:10 am. I am not an information scientist. This disturbs me frankly, but has generated great debate about the nature of our field which needs to happen if we are to evolve and mature into the 21st century. It’s not a question I know the answer to yet, but it’s one I try to keep in mind as I work my way through entering the field. Filed under Library Education. State of the Profession.

Thursday, August 21, 2014. Books are such a simple thing-a cover, pages with text, and maybe a few illustrations, yet they have the power to transform us, to inspire us, to enlighten us, and to entertain us. What is it to think about Life? What is it to have a balanced and effective life? Many people talk about work-life balance which is such a sad way at looking at work. The opposite of life is death, not work! And surely we can be at work and be fully alive. Thinking about work-life balance diminishes our work or dums down our perception of life.
