Life on the Isthmus. Friday, April 26, 2013. Ok guys, yes I'm aware that I've not posted a blog entry in approximately 17 years. At first I got a lot of flack for it, but now I think everyone's just forgotten. So here you all are: a brand spanking new blog post. Given my apparent apathy for photo taking, all photo credits go to Ms. Erica Jones. Not a lot of explanation needed. Hipster Ngob.and Kingsley. This man has the biggest dead animal on his back. He is therefore the manliest man at ballseria. The vi...

I Know I have been in Panama for awhile when. My hair looks like that. [Actually it's a bird's nest that a woman was wearing as a wig at Balsaria. I own a variety of utensils but I still only use the spoon. I eat everything out of a bowl even though I own plates. Dry leaves are trash and must be burned compulsively. Sunday, April 8, 2012.

What Carolyn Probably Doesn’t Notice Anymore. Don't worry, I haven't reverted to writing in the 3rd person. Eric wrote a guest blog post for me reflecting on his visit to my community! In late May, I visited Carolyn in Panama for 10 days – the longest consecutive time we had spent together since our early teens. At 5 or so children per mother, ...

Harry Potter and the Floor that Needed Sweeping. For some reason, the topic of Harry Potter. Came up more than once over Thanksgiving: who has seen the latest movie, who has read any of the books in Spanish, etc. Fact: I have read all of the books in English but I never made it past the 3. Of course I thought of Harry Potter. Ata making wo...

Adventuring Susan: September 2012
http://adventuringsusan.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 13, 2012. I enjoyed a 2 week trip to the USA in August, celebrating my one year of being in the country of Panama! That means the next year is going to go by really quickly! I'd like to share some stories and photos from the trip. At their house. The couple has promoted these stoves in Haiti as a way to reduce deforestation, as less wood is used to cook than on a campfire. They generously gave us blueberries as well! We returned to Boston through rush hour traffic and attended a pract...

Adventuring Susan: La fiesta grandisimo!
http://adventuringsusan.blogspot.com/2013/07/la-fiesta-grandisimo.html
Wednesday, July 10, 2013. A skit: a happy family in their "house" (of raised arms) with a new latrine. On June 1st, we celebrated the completion of the latrine project with about 500 community members. Together, we've built 70 pit latrines! Unfortunately one of those got buried in a small landslide from the steep slope above; we're considering how to replace it.) The project is now done ; this month one of my remaining tasks is to visit each family, check in on their latrine (are they using it? Group fla...
