This I Heard

Tuesday, April 21, 2015. The Lovin' Spoonful - "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" (1965). The melodic refrain you hear in the intro turns out to be the melody of the bridge. The lyrical refrain happens in the verses (in two different spots). There is no chorus. The lyrics are runic. Today said the time was right for me to follow you. That's right, what does today. Have to say about it? What are the signs I can see? I knew I'd find you in a day or two. And when we've had a few more days. Because you seem to ...

This I Heard: The Parliaments - "Don't Be Sore at Me" (1967)

http://thisiheard.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-parliaments-dont-be-sore-at-me-1967.html

Sunday, June 29, 2014. The Parliaments - "Don't Be Sore at Me" (1967). After the intro, you get the chorus of this song first. It's not a chorus that rides a particularly dynamic peak, however, and is in fact quite expository in nature. It therefore has verse-like characteristics. The first line (the refrain) occurs as the iii chord and the ii chord are merely descending to the tonic, arriving with a very weak cadence (iii-ii-I) if you can call it one at all. This I Heard: Lesley Gore - "Maybe I Know" (1964)

http://thisiheard.blogspot.com/2015/02/lesley-gore-maybe-i-know-1964.html

Monday, February 16, 2015. Lesley Gore - "Maybe I Know" (1964). Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich again. Chorus, really, had moved from D minor to the relative major (F) and the end of the verse confirms this by landing on A major as a dominant chord leading back to D minor when the chorus starts again. Bridge does this, too. This song is full of gold. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Lesley Gore - Maybe I Know (1964). Merle Haggard - If We Make It Through December (.

This I Heard: Roberto Carlos - "Eu Te Darei o Céu" (1966)

Monday, December 16, 2013. Roberto Carlos - "Eu Te Darei o Céu" (1966). Another structural marvel, with a chorus so good you've got to hear it six times. A - solo guitar riff and intro chords (3 4 bars). B - chorus (8 bars). A' - intro chords - link (3 bars). C - verse #1 (16 bars). B - chorus (8 bars). A' - intro chords - link (3 bars). C - verse #2 (16 bars). B - chorus (8 bars). A' - intro chords - link (3 bars). D - bridge (9 bars). B - chorus (8 bars 1 bar link). B' - solo over intro chords (8 bars).

This I Heard: December 2014

http://thisiheard.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 19, 2014. The Shangri-Las - "Out in the Streets" (1965). The wordless chant at the beginning, in G# minor while the song proper is in D major. An objet d'art. Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich concocted this one. The other ladies start the verse out, but it's an uneven six bars. Part two is lead singer Mary Weiss and it goes a full eight bars like a self-sustaining unit, including a refrain line at the end. Deceptive use of a secondary dominant chord back to the tonic. More verses afterward...

Friday, October 23, 2009. Well, fuck. The 'Ships turn in something a little different this time, but with all the rock intact. These tunes circle in my head all day. The little solo from Radical Amazement pops in my head when I turn corners into hallways. The amazing melody from the chorus on Let It Rest For A Little While almost brings tears to my eyes. And, Meddle. Holy shit, Meddle. Sunday, August 9, 2009. Jar of Jam Ton of Bricks. Jellyfish Reflector and Cheyenne 7". Thursday, May 7, 2009. This album...

Moments of thought and life reflections. August 4, 2015. Now then where was I? July 8, 2015. Dear readers, thank you for checking in on my blog on July 4th expecting to see some thoughts on the day. Your inquiries inspired me to write this one. Although the 4th of July has come and gone, my sentiments do remain the same.). There are few American National Holidays that we celebrate as a nation, but none as powerful as the 4. I find it troubling that too many people blame government rule for our social pro...
