Spielt verschiedene Instrumente von Paulino Bernabé. Eine 1996 von Bernhard Kresse nach Johann Georg Staufers "Legnani-Modell" von ca. 1830 gebaute Staufergitarre. Gitarre von Frank Krocker, sowie als Höhepunkt dieser Kollektion ein 1994 von Paulino Bernabé in Madrid fertiggestelltes Instrument. Welches als ein Höhepunkt der Gitarrenbaukunst unserer Zeit angesehen werden darf.

Received his first guitar lessons in the towns of Lübeck and Hamburg in Northern Germany. Since 1991 Karstens teaches at the Music Departement at the University of Cologne (Musikabteilung der Universität Köln). As a visiting professor. And as guitar performer he has been invited to several conservatories and guitar festivals in Europe, Turkey, Central and South America. These activities as well as his concerts as a soloist. Karstens has premiered several works for guitar written for and dedicated to him.

Erhielt seinen ersten Gitarrenunterricht in Lübeck und Hamburg (Prof. Klaus Hempel). Seit 1991 unterrichtet Karstens an der Musikabteilung der Universität Köln. Als Gastdozent. Wurde er an Konservatorien und Gitarrenfestivals in Europa, der Türkei, Zentral- und Südamerika eingeladen. Diese Aktivitäten sowie seine Konzerte als Solist. Wurden durch Goethe-Institut, Deutschen Musikrat, Humboldt Gesellschaft und Jeunesse Musical Europa unterstützt.
