Review: Female Convict Scorpion: Beast Stable (1972). July 20, 2015. The third of five “Female Convict Scorpion (AKA Female Prisoner Scorpion)” films, and the last helmed by series director Shunya Ito,. Takes our anti-heroine out of the prison yard and into the mean streets to fight for her life as an escaped convict. Unfortunately,. Never rises above its mediocre script. Nami Matsushima, played by the beautiful Meiko Kaji (. Meiko Kaji is nice to look at, but she’s given very little to do here....

Review: Gate of Hell (1953). July 5, 2015. Was the first color film for Japanese studio Daiei and it garnered a lot of praise in the west when it was released here in 1954. It even won two Academy Awards — one for best costume design for a color feature and another honorary award for best foreign language film. Remains one of his most noteworthy efforts due to the fact that it was Japan’s first color film. Based on the play by Kan Kikuchi,. Is a must-see. If not, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Review: The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (2013). May 18, 2015. If you watch a lot of the films from Studio Ghibli on DVD or blu ray, you’ll notice that there are rarely any in-depth “making of” extras on the discs. The most you’re likely to get are some press conferences or preproduction artwork. What most Ghibli fans want is insight into the creative process of the great Hayao Miyazaki. This documentary provides that, and more. The Wind Rises,. I didn’t give. This documentary is poetic and lyrical and ...
