The long way home: Canadian edition | Ways & Means
https://waysandmeansadventures.wordpress.com/2013/09/04/the-long-way-home-canadian-edition
Adventures beyond the bubble. The long way home: Canadian edition. September 4, 2013. In On the Road. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and nowhere is that more true than for a trip shaped like a circle. The good news, for us, is that the way home passed though some of the most spectacular scenery Canada has to offer – and that we got to visit boatloads of friends and family along the way. First up: Vancouver and the hearty Mongol-rally-esque welcome of Dave Moscrop. Obligatory Lake Louise shot.

Interlude: Southern Food | Ways & Means
https://waysandmeansadventures.wordpress.com/2013/08/04/interlude-southern-food
Adventures beyond the bubble. August 4, 2013. It’s going to take us a day or so to recover from three nights in New Orleans enough to get photos up, so in the meantime, here’s a selection of the tastiest southern food we enjoyed in our swing through South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Cornbread, shrimp and grits at Husk. In Charleston – served with dry cider, which was more popular than beer in the South before prohibition. And of course, what’s a coast without plenty of fresh oysters? James of the North.

Day 10-11: Marfa, West Texas | Ways & Means
https://waysandmeansadventures.wordpress.com/2013/08/09/day-10-11-marfa-west-texas
Adventures beyond the bubble. Day 10-11: Marfa, West Texas. August 9, 2013. In On the Road. Imagine you're driving down a dusty, remote desert highway a mere 160 km from the Mexico border. To your left, you see dry brush land populated by cattle and the occasional fox, dusky mountains in the distance, and a neon Playboy bunny. Welcome to Marfa, where this kind of contrast is the lifeblood of a community that mashes up cowboys and modern minimalist art with aplomb. 8220;Downtown” Marfa. Fill in your detai...

Day 21-24: The Pacific Northwest | Ways & Means
https://waysandmeansadventures.wordpress.com/2013/08/25/day-21-24-the-pacific-northwest
Adventures beyond the bubble. Day 21-24: The Pacific Northwest. August 25, 2013. In On the Road. After a great morning hike in Fern Canyon, we packed up, said goodbye to the ocean and headed inland through yet more spectacular stands of redwoods to the interstate. Destination: Portland. 8221; as we sampled the offerings of seemingly endless “pods” of food carts. Finally, late in the day, we crossed the border back into Canada and had a warm welcome at Dave's place. Good to be back! Portland, here we come.

Day 5: Montgomery, Alabama | Ways & Means
https://waysandmeansadventures.wordpress.com/2013/08/01/day-5-montgomery-alabama
Adventures beyond the bubble. Day 5: Montgomery, Alabama. August 1, 2013. In On the Road. The halfway point between Savannah and New Orleans offered a great chance to dig into some of the most important sites in civil rights history. The main reason for our visit was to pay our respects at the Civil Rights Memorial. Our hosts for the evening were Isaiah and Johnnie Sankey at the Butterfly Inn. The memorial marks important achievements alongside the deaths of activists and innocent bystanders. The Greyhou...

Days 12-13: Santa Fe, New Mexico | Ways & Means
https://waysandmeansadventures.wordpress.com/2013/08/13/days-12-13-santa-fe-new-mexico-2
Adventures beyond the bubble. Days 12-13: Santa Fe, New Mexico. August 13, 2013. In On the Road. On our way from watching a spectacular sunset and drinking margaritas, we met a pair of Texans who had the best description for Santa Fe: it's the Quebec City of America. It has a much more European feel to it than anywhere else in the US, and history seeps from every sun-baked stone. The water is so clear you can see 25 feet deep. People in Roswell take their aliens very seriously. Some under nourished aliens.

Day 9: Austin, Texas | Ways & Means
https://waysandmeansadventures.wordpress.com/2013/08/06/day-9-austin-texas
Adventures beyond the bubble. Day 9: Austin, Texas. August 6, 2013. In On the Road. It’s no mystery why 10,000 people move to Austin every month. After what can only be described as a 24-hour fling with this hot city, we totally get it. This is how I feel about Austin. South Congress, so close yet so far from downtown. The best taco bar in the area is an old feed store with wicked margaritas. No boring walls here. Austin even inspired Kiavash to tidy up a bit at a vintage barber shop. On a day as hot as ...

Day 16-17: Las Vegas and Death Valley | Ways & Means
https://waysandmeansadventures.wordpress.com/2013/08/18/day-16-17-las-vegas-and-death-valley
Adventures beyond the bubble. Day 16-17: Las Vegas and Death Valley. August 18, 2013. In On the Road. I, however, will always remember Vegas as a great place to catch up on sleep after hiking the Grand Canyon. We managed to walk the Strip, knock back two cocktails, inhale a great dinner, and lose $9 in the slots before collapsing in a heap. (That said, the clever Art-o-matics at the Cosmopolitan were a highlight for unique souvenirs). Dancing fountains at the Bellagio. A Joshua tree at the park. You are ...

thoughtoutlife | Just another WordPress.com site
Just another WordPress.com site. January 17, 2011. Today I am starting a blog and I’m trying to figure out how to approach it! There are lots of clever ways to tell stories of my days, but I want this writing to be real, and show my heart. It is easy to get carried away worrying about and wondering if anyone cares or will read this. I am going for purity of thought and, hopefully, clarity of expression. A window into the soul, for other souls to peer at and ponder. The Elegant Grunge Theme.

Person Shouts at Movie. Person Shouts at Movie. Drew Gough shouts at Jurassic Park 3D. Posted by Drew Gough. As early '90s science fiction films go, there are few more terrifying than Jurassic Park. How else would we have learned not to trust science, dinosaurs, lawyers, Jeff Goldblum, any Attenborough, jeeps, fathers, embryos, Samuel L. Jackson, large plants, shaving cream, and history? The Passionate Moderate Manifesto. Originally posted on Koli Mitra. The idea of civilization either “progressing” or “conserving” itself is useless. Sometimes doing what’s “good” for the world and its inhabitants needs something radical. Other times, it requires holding onto something traditional. Long ago, G.K. Chesterton said: The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business…. Continue reading →. A Bouquet of Yellow Butterflies for Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
