Son of Beard: Poetry is a damn dirty business.
http://sonofbeard.blogspot.com/2009/05/poetry-is-damn-dirty-business.html
Some things to think about. Monday, 18 May 2009. Poetry is a damn dirty business. It's not enough that the House of Commons seems to be the most corrupt place in Britain at the moment but now we have scandal and dirt in another of our venerable institutions. Oxford University has appointed a new Professor of Poetry, Ruth Padel. This appointment holds a large degree of prestige, little pay (£6,901) and involves the holder giving only three lectures per year. Who was seen by many to be the front runner.

Son of Beard: Quitting the real thing
http://sonofbeard.blogspot.com/2009/04/quitting-real-thing.html
Some things to think about. Sunday, 19 April 2009. Quitting the real thing. Hello my name is Lawrence and I'm addicted to Coca-Cola, or rather, I was. Coke Zero, that was my thing, (I could take or leave Diet and when it came to the full-fat, 8 teaspoons of sugar Regular (classic, original) I steered clear unless it was with vodka). But I could easily get through two 500ml bottles of Zero a day. At work it would be more thanks to the cafeteria or the vending machines downstairs. A crusader against injust...

A Woman's Writes. Sustaining feminist thinking in the 21st century. Newer posts →. The mini-skirt of the Internet? February 16, 2012. Well let’s just see how we go…. A hush descends … (Too theatrical? So here are my post-event thoughts. The socially normal closure by twitter name exchange. Discussion: while the Laurie Penny article ostensibly started us off, the evening centred more on social media than I had anticipated. I was expecting something more broadly looking at women commenting and receivin...

Booze, Shoes and Tattoos: June 2008
http://boozeshoesandtattoos.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Booze, Shoes and Tattoos. Monday, 30 June 2008. God, that was good. As my regular reader (not pluralising it yet - though I'm almost sure I have TWO blog-followers) will know, me and my pals went down to Twickenham on Friday night to rock the Jovi. It was marvellous. Ok, so he's getting on a bit - but he's still very fit and had us screaming our little hearts out. Here's how it went down. We're at work.we're ready to rock. Pre concert bloody marys. Woohoo - we're in (one looong arsed train journey later).

The story of a girl who should have known better: Boys (and girls) and toys: the Morgan SLR
http://almostalady.blogspot.com/2008/05/boys-and-girls-and-toys-morgan-slr.html
The story of a girl who should have known better. Wednesday, 14 May 2008. Boys (and girls) and toys: the Morgan SLR. Those who have looked at my Twitter profile have probably guessed that I'm a bit of a Morgan. Fan This is true: my best beloved Connery (a Morgan 8 with racing pedigree) is nothing short of a god among cars. As is often the case, the weakness for classic cars is a family failing. With the Roadster, 8 and 3-wheeler under their belts, the latest project. Posted by Almost a Lady. I like to ha...

The story of a girl who should have known better: Statues of Doom
http://almostalady.blogspot.com/2009/02/statues-of-doom.html
The story of a girl who should have known better. Monday, 2 February 2009. This childhood 'gem' turned up over the weekend in the course of a parental house clearout. I can only assume that Steven Moffat has taken to raiding Sussex homes in search of his Dr Who storylines. I'll admit his title was an improvement. A few minutes later, Martha and Julia saw the statues. They were standing around a stone pillar, with their arms by their sides. Julia suggested that they should take a closer look. Girls read c...

The story of a girl who should have known better: Things I learned from a London cab driver
http://almostalady.blogspot.com/2009/01/things-i-learned-from-london-cab-driver.html
The story of a girl who should have known better. Tuesday, 20 January 2009. Things I learned from a London cab driver. I learned some important things from my cab driver today. I was on the way to a meeting with a colleague and we were discussing house prices when the driver chipped in. 8220;The government may have some culpability,” I said, cautiously, “but surely we as individuals are ultimately responsible for the decisions we make? 8220;That’s what they. 8220;You’ve gone very quiet on me,”...

The story of a girl who should have known better: Mostly Harmless
http://almostalady.blogspot.com/2008/12/mostly-harmless.html
The story of a girl who should have known better. Monday, 15 December 2008. This weekend, nursing yet another festive hangover and reviewing the latest batch of photos on Facebook, I realised the happy truth: it’s not that I’ve turned into some kind of minor sex pest, it’s actually all about the. I have to say, as strategies go, it’s really not that bad. Posted by Almost a Lady. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Follow me on Twitter.
