Weekly Market Notes: January 2013
http://weeklymarketnotes.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Jan 6, 2013. At the beginning of 2012 we doubt that many people would have expected the S&P 500 to increase by over 13%, the yield on 10 year treasuries drop to 1.7%, and emerging market stocks to increase by 17%. In spite of a middling economy, divisive election, Fiscal Cliff, recession in Europe, and chaos in DC, the markets performed spectacularly, climbing the proverbial Wall of Worry (OK-it’s not quite a proverb) to post outsized gains for the year. In case you need a reminder, the Fiscal Cliff is a...

Weekly Market Notes: August 2012

Aug 26, 2012. Just days before Chairman Bernanke. One of the key discussion points of this election has been the President's desire to spread the wealth vs. Mr. Romney's goal of spreading the tax burden. The chart below shows the last 95 years of tax rates for income, corporate and capital gains. We have discussed China's slowdown over the past year, but the chart below show how bad the equity markets have been as well. Believe it or not, the Shanghai is one of the few indexes that has almost round t...

Weekly Market Notes: May 2012
http://weeklymarketnotes.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
May 29, 2012. Stocks and commodities are both finding a bid this morning after the Case-Shiller home price index fell at a slower pace than expected, declining by 2% in the first quarter vs. expectations of a 3% decline. Warmer than normal weather helped drive better than expected sales across the country’s snow belt. For March, prices declined by 2.6% after a 3.5% decline in February. The net is that it’s still difficult to find yield. The article noted there is a shortage of safe investment options.

Weekly Market Notes: July 2012
http://weeklymarketnotes.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Jul 29, 2012. Promise of Help Drives Markets. All eyes will be on the Fed this week, with expectations running high the committee will at least hint at future intervention. We fully expect some type of Fed action before the election, and will use the resulting market surge to pull back on equity positions and play some defense heading into 2013. My suggestion is not to hold on too long because I get the sense most of Wall Street has the same plan. Almost lost in the week's craziness was the GDP report, w...

Oct 29, 2013. Obama-How Does the Smartest Man in the Room Know Nothing? October 29, 2013. President Obama, the legal scholar and supposedly the smartest man in the room, promised to be superior to George Bush because of his hands on approach, his involvement in every detail, and his ability to bridge the gap between Republicans and Democrats to craft bi-partisan solutions to problems. How has the Lecturer in Chief done since taking office? We need a Truman type Democrat. As mentioned above, the President...

Jun 25, 2012. Oil Falls as Global Economy Stalls. Grupo Modelo, the maker of Corona beer, is up strong this morning as Anheuser-Busch InBev is close to acquiring the remaining stake in the company for $12 billion. The deal values Modelo at $20 billion and further expands the branding and reach of the world’s largest beer maker. A long running question during the Euro crisis has been whether backstopping all of Europe will take a toll on Germany. In a “be careful what you ask for” decision, it...The revis...
