Thoughts on Security

Sunday, March 9, 2014. Some new Samsung, Motorola, Asus, and LG phones are reported to have come with malware installed. That the malware, which appears to be an altered version of a Netflix app, was not installed at the factory. It is thought most likely that the malware was installed at some point in the supply chain. The malware in question was harvesting passwords and financial information. And relaying that information to a server in Russia. Links to this post. Saturday, March 1, 2014. Hopefully the...

Thoughts on Security: March 2013

http://thoughtsonsecurity.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 29, 2013. Book Review: Security Engineering by Anderson. Anderson's update to his classic reference book is a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of any system administrator or enterprise architect. As an author, I can tell you that it is easy to tell the difference between a book that someone has rushed to press and one that is a carefully constructed reference. Anderson took the time to do his book right. Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Hijacked Management Server Implicated in South Korea Attack.

Thoughts on Security: May 2013

http://thoughtsonsecurity.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 20, 2013. Chinese End Hacking Hiatus. Chinese hackers associated with the PLA (People's Liberation Army) had dialed back their cyberattacks. In the wake of US protests. This hiatus appears to have ended. An embarrassing public exposure. Of a unit closely associated with the PLA had led to a temporary decrease in attacks. The Chinese government appears to have calculated that the downside of the publicity surrounding the attacks. Is outweighed by the benefits they are reaping. The value of a d...

Thoughts on Security: April 2013

Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Apache Attack Invisible to Usual Investigative Methods. A new, widespread attack against the Apache web server appears to have infected a large number of systems. The so-called "CDorked" attack is very difficult to detect because it hides its evidence in shared memory. Rather than on the file system. The only file-system level evidence is obfuscated within the httpd binary. Eset has released a python script. To help administrators verify whether the httpd binary has been affected.

Thoughts on Security: Outsourcing, Lax Authentication, and the Target Hack

http://thoughtsonsecurity.blogspot.com/2014/02/outsourcing-lax-authentication-and.html

Friday, February 7, 2014. Outsourcing, Lax Authentication, and the Target Hack. It turns out that the hackers who broke into Target's POS terminals. Used credentials from Target's HVAC vendor. Target's HVAC vendor, had access to Target's network in order to monitor the temperatures in the stores and the health of the HVAC equipment. It is less clear why access was allowed with weak authentication,. And why there was no network segmentation. Between the HVAC units and the POS terminals. From Techie to Boss.

Companion blog for Scott Cromar's Solaris Troubleshooting Handbook. Wednesday, June 19, 2013. Veritas Volume Manager Notes. Veritas has long since been purchased by Symantec, but its products continue to be sold under the Veritas name. Over time, we can expect that some of the products will have name changes to reflect the new ownership. Veritas produces volume and file system software that allows for extremely flexible and straightforward management of a system's disk storage resources. Now that ZFS.

Monday, 9 January 2017. In Search Of My Prince Charming. The following is my experiment with prose-poetry. Please feel free to discuss symbolism in the comments section. In Search of My Prince Charming. I wandered through a forest so dark,. That I knew not if it was night or day. Over hills and vales I went, and through rivulets in spate. I knew not what time t'was, what week, month or day. Many a seasons went by of hot humid days, of rains and cold clammy days. I wandered through the forest of gloom.

December 6, 2015. December 6, 2015. This isn’t my first blog, and I’m sure it won’t be my last. I currently run 4 blogs, hosted on 2 different platforms, this will change that to 5 on 3. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of leaving a trail kind of like Hansel and Gretel. Little breadcrumbs to help remind people, I was here. I exist. I like to write, and for a very long time I didn’t write anything because I couldn’t find a strong enough first line. For once in my life I want something permanent.

A Few Cool Beans. Friday, August 14, 2015. To learn or not to learn, I think, for a programmer, that is matter of life or death situation. Knowledge is powerless without execution. Translate in coding, that means, if you do not code it, see your code run in action, technologies are nothing but mere words. Words that are obtuse, funny-sounding, most likely hard to pronounce, utterly meaningless. A website that I randomly "self"-published a couple of silly things ages ago. Wednesday, October 8, 2014.
