A place for recording passing thoughts usually arising while reading. Saturday, September 27, 2014. 1938, 6 dicembre.

Thought Weather: Human amidst the inhuman

http://www.thoughtweather.blogspot.com/2015/01/human-amidst-inhuman.html

A place for recording passing thoughts usually arising while reading. Sunday, January 4, 2015. Human amidst the inhuman. The final shot of Tarkovsky's Solaris. One of the themes of the film is for the various characters to find a way to be human in the inhuman environment of Solaris and space exploration. But is not the real Earth also just such a small island in the midst of the vast inhuman and possibly numinous ocean of space? I have written about these colour-drained shots elsewhere. Where the aged m...

A place for recording passing thoughts usually arising while reading. Sunday, June 1, 2014. Too much going on at once. In a recent post about alliterative effects in poetry. I mentioned a sort of effect which "gets under your skin, or beneath your analytic defences; it sneaks into the brain directly like perfume, or music with too many things going on at once." This type of too-much-going-on-at-once is beautifully described by Douglas Hofstadter in a piece he wrote about Chopin:. View my complete profile.

Sparks From Stones: April 2015

http://sparksfromstones.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Friday, April 10, 2015. There is a memorable poem by Martin Kratz in most recent but one issue of The Rialto. Called 'Curriculum'. I say it is memorable because I remembered it, after skimming through the issue when it arrived, before mislaying it. Interestingly I had misremembered the title as being 'Testudo' which is a key word in the culminating final stanza of the poem. We go to fetch them in, someone shouts: Testudo! In silence, they wait for instruction.

Sparks From Stones: April 2014

http://sparksfromstones.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Saturday, April 5, 2014. Never trust a poet who can drive. Nothing ever happens to novelists. Except - this. They are born. They get sick, they get well, they hang around the inkwell. They leave home, with their stuff in a hired van. They learn to drive, unlike poets (poets don't drive. Never trust a poet who can drive. Never trust a poet at the wheel. If he can. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Software designer and Infrequent poet.

Sparks From Stones: Kilter

http://sparksfromstones.blogspot.com/2014/06/kilter.html

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Monday, June 2, 2014. Catching up on Anthony Lawrence's Signal Flare. 8230; the long opening poem, an elegy so clearly reminiscent of Slessor's Five Bells. Has these lines which nicely draw out the word 'kilter' from it usual environment, highlighting its strangeness. Your absence the start. Of a long playing record. Of scenes and conversations. That are not out of place. Or kilter with you death …. And in The Age of Epigram. When an out-of-kilter cummerbund.

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Sunday, August 17, 2014. Pope remarked, in relation to his heavily corrected and interlined original workbook for his Iliad. I believe you would find upon examination that those parts which have been the most corrected read the easiest.". That strew'd with warriors dead the Phrygian plain,. And peopled the dark shades with heroes slain. Which were reworked into this. That wrath which hurled to Pluto's gloomy reign. The souls of mighty chiefs untimely slain.

Sparks From Stones: October 2013

http://sparksfromstones.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Wednesday, October 23, 2013. The recent brief uproar on plagiarism still vexes me. There was much public condemnation of poetic processes which involved shallow reworkings, borrowings, appropriation, and theft - choose your terminology to match your level of moral outrage. The first instance that came to my attention was the case of an Australian poet who had apparently lifted phrases from a considerable number of sources to concoct a prize-winning poem. Now we can...

From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Friday, October 3, 2014. One of the neglected books published in that momentous year 1922 is Robert Graves' On English Poetry. William Heinemann). From the vantage point of 2014 its 61 short and chatty sections read very like blog posts. Sadly much of this book and much of Graves' Poetic Unreason and other studies. 1925, Cecil Palmer) are omitted — following Graves' own later abridgements — from the Collected Writings on Poetry. From cold stones sparks of fire do fly. Thursday, May 31, 2012. Poor Monk, dying. Thelonious and the Baroness. In the NY Times about Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter, a new book of her photos, and an exhibition at Gallery at Hermès, brought bak to mind one of the first poems I read by August Kleinzahler . 'Love Poem' from 1989 book Earthquake Weather. The poem starts with a striking mixing of registers. As long as the cat comes home. And the skinheads keep. To their concrete shell, over the fence.

Working to Satisfy Spiritual Hunger by Keeping Insight In Sight. July Ah, July…. The month where tomatoes should be hanging ripe and red; the time the ocean waves refresh thousands of bathers seeking relief from heat and humidity; and an imaginary “peak” in warm weather conditions. (We don’t have to be told it is opposite in the southern hemisphere). But does inspiration and motivation have seasons? Do we feel better in summer rather than winter? Do we feel UN motivated when those rainy days slip upon us?
