What’s it all about? The curse of the Bell. July 26, 2013. We’re leaving. There’s no future for us anymore. It’s too late to change what’s happened; it’s time to make a fresh start. The words were still ringing in his ears. Tick Tick. Tick. Time was running out. The pressure was rising. No matter how he crunched the figures he couldn’t get it to work out the right way. Desperation was beginning to set in. It was dark outside. How long had he been working on this? It has to be right first time? He sat bac...

What’s it all about? | Throw Away Lines

http://www.throwawaylines.org/what’s-it-all-about

What’s it all about? What’s it all about? My original intention was to write stories based around each scrap. They would form the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle which, when completed, would turn into a book called. I built up my collection to well over forty scraps. Then nothing happened. Not a single word was written and eventually I decided I needed some help. I met John Simmons. For lunch at The Museum of London. He liked the idea and pitched it to the board of 26. We launched the project at Wordstock.

Tiny Tales | Throw Away Lines

http://www.throwawaylines.org/clerkenwell-crocodile-stories

What’s it all about? These tales are Clerkenwell Crocodile micro-stories from Wordstock, the festival of words. Each writer picked a scrap of paper with a theme, title or lyrics for a tiny 26-word tale to be written on the move. They set off in single file through Clerkenwell Green, shimmied through the backstreets up to Exmouth Market, then ambled down Farringdon Road, back to the Free Word centre and lunch…. Break the line of pavements. Gripping the faces of buildings. One high and narrow. On the groun...

Hugh Dalton and I | Throw Away Lines

What’s it all about? The skin of my back. Hugh Dalton and I. July 16, 2013. Hugh Dalton and I have known each other for twenty-three years now. Of course, I have the higher IQ, although he was always too pigheaded to admit it. All puckered up like a pit bull’s arse. Poor Hugh. He never could take losing to a woman. Hugh could have been anything he wanted to be, you know. I used to tell him he should go for. Well it was really quite unlike him. He had always acted as if we were indulging in a permanen...

Fourth night | Throw Away Lines

http://www.throwawaylines.org/throw-away-lines/fourth-night

What’s it all about? December 2, 2011. It was Puzzle Time again. This was the fourth school night in a row, and a treat for them both. And though Nana had become more accustomed to grown-up wine-amplified chatter on evenings in with old friends, she loved this disruption to the norm. The sound of her granddaughter’s exclamations were welcomed and embraced by all the corners of the house. How was your day Anya? What did you learn today? Well, Sophie gave out invitations for her 7. Nana smiled and winked.

Stunted stories and paltry poems by Andy Hayes. Two thousand and fourteen receipts. Be thankful for what you’ve got. A love letter to London →. A man looks better with a beer in his hand. January 16, 2015. John said, ‘A man looks better with a beer in his hand’, so I took one. It was 11.30am. I drank and he spoke. His pills meant he couldn’t join me, and I felt he was drinking vicariously through me. I was drinking for two. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Be thankful for what you’ve got. 19 There...

Stunted stories and paltry poems by Andy Hayes. Two thousand and fourteen receipts. A love letter to London. The last tube home →. The black ink on his fingertips. February 28, 2015. It was a big night, a great night, he’d swept her off her feet. And now it was time to go, she had to make a decision. She thought about her man, asleep and dribbling: the black ink on his fingertips smudging the sofa. ‘Well? She slipped off her heels, ran like the wind, and just made the last bus to Peckham. Stunted stories and paltry poems by Andy Hayes. Two thousand and fourteen receipts. Newer posts →. 14 Down by the river. May 21, 2016. I spotted the road to Cockermouth, found a good place to stick out my thumb, and held up a hastily scrawled sign. It was a short way from a set of traffic lights, so I could be seen before the cars and trucks gained too much speed and whizzed by. I got out Chaucer’s. Why not just enjoy the trip for what it was? The hostel was an old stone mill house right by the river, ba...

What is this Bollyfiller? Who is this Roshni person? I do stuff and write about it. Here’s a very very short story I wrote a couple of years ago, inspired by my many visits to beauty salons on Ealing Road in Wembley. To manage your expectations: it has nothing to do with Halloween.). Anisha’s phone is dead. After a long day at the salon where she waxes ladies’ limbs, faces and other bits, she comes home and puts it to charge in the bedroom she shares with one of the other salon girls. Hi ver r u? I’ve spent most of my 20s being anxious that my knowledge of Western pop culture is limited. Then I realised it didn’t matter, because my extensive knowledge of Bollywood more than fills in those gaps. That’s my superpower. Lucky you. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. I spent the beginning of August trekking back and forth across a dusty, dry, colourful land, while psytrance boomed out across the playa at Boom Festival. In Idanha-a-Velha, Portugal. Not only for psytrance lovers, Boom has several stages; Dance Temple (psytrance), Alchemy Circle (sometimes quite bass-led, but this time full of minimal techno), Chill Out Gardens (ambient) and Sacred Fire (actual bands).

Genealogy, history, and such. The cost of voting. My mother’s cousin recently found their grandfather’s record of poll tax. My Armenian great-grandfather had fled the draft of the Ottoman Army and sailed to America in 1910. He arrived in Boston on February 6. By 1914, his wife and daughter had come to America and their first American-born son was almost a year old. Based on this document, his name was already being Anglicized to “Peter”. If not, does that mean they did not deserve the right to vote?
