Rivers Joinery: July 2014
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Monday, 21 July 2014. I Adze a good weekend. I had a bit of a break from bench work at the weekend. I have had this crooked oak log for a while and decided the time was ripe to convert it into two 'crucks', destined for our allotment gateway. Our allotment looks after our chickens and provides us with fresh vegetables, so it deserves an attractive threshold. I cheated and ripped it with a chainsaw, I didn't want to risk a bad split! A bit of cleaning up with my big adze. There's a fair few in this piece.

Rivers Joinery: January 2015
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, 10 January 2015. Deep in the woods. I've had a few mishaps over the end of the year. I scratched my cornea while machining some timber a few days before Christmas. My small chainsaw gave up the ghost the next day. Then on Christmas Eve my car died. A clear message to take it easy, stop work and eat food. I obeyed. So it was with a happy heart, and fortunately wet weather gear that I headed to Hillyfield for a Timber Extraction course this Saturday morning. This horse loves to work. Maybe the ti...

Rivers Joinery: A piece of Totnes off to Thailand?
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-piece-of-totnes-off-to-thailand.html
Sunday, 24 May 2015. A piece of Totnes off to Thailand? Driving through Totnes yesterday, I passed a sign "Garage Sale". I turned round and went back. This was covered up with a blanket, displaying things on top. Is it for sale? Sorry, I am emigrating to Thailand and taking Granny's hall chest with me. Unusually for me, I like its lack of decoration. A large screwdown holdfast, a brace just like mine, and possibly the shortest chisel in the world. 27 May 2015 at 08:25. Looks to be a bend in it. Rivers Joinery: October 2014
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Monday, 27 October 2014. I acquired the usual old bit of iron from the boot sale yesterday. Ok, its a bit rusty, but its ten prize medals, 1" with a 3 sweep I think, and only 50p. Worth trying to save. We went into the chapel before having a guided tour of the main residence (it is still a family home today). Lovely pew ends. I love the simplicity of this corner cupboard. But this bit of panelling may have arrived in the present day, original and complete. Saturday, 25 October 2014. Into a sleek, polishe...

Rivers Joinery: April 2015
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Friday, 24 April 2015. Don't change the name of your blog unless you want nobody to see it! I have been working on the settle I started over a year ago recently. It is taking a long time to make, but then it is a huge piece of furniture. I had a piece of oak roughed out for the last seat board in the autumn, but I have been busy doing other things. On with planing to size. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Peter Follansbee, joiner's notes. One spoon became un-sold AND SOLD AGAIN. A few coppice stools . Dont ch...

Rivers Joinery: February 2015
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, 21 February 2015. Many rivers to cross, but I'm not going on the ferry. Before the round wheel was invented, did the square wheel have a brief period in vogue? Probably not, but it is surprising how well a square shape 'rolls'. In with Wendy's new doors. I've been doing a bit more 3-d carving recently with this lion corbel. I definitely need to invest in some more turning tools; a 2" gouge and skew are just not sufficient. I reckon I will just about make the handles though. I live way up stream...

Rivers Joinery: Someone making a window
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2015/05/someone-making-window.html
Tuesday, 19 May 2015. Someone making a window. I just found this video again. 20 May 2015 at 08:06. Very good. Like half-way to slow TV, I think the very factual commentary adds a lot without taking away much. 20 May 2015 at 09:17. Thats what I like about it. Simple, skilled, seemingly effortless. More on sash planes here http:/ www.hackneytools.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/EnglishSashPlanesbyDavidNelson.pdf. 20 May 2015 at 21:37. A perfect pace for an informative film like this. Rivers Joinery: March 2015
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 31 March 2015. Getting on with it. I've been out in the oak woods, doing some thinning and processing of the timber, with the chainsaw mill. Early spring sunshine, tagteam between me with the chainsaw and the woodpeckers, who are the real foresters round here! I have had help from Arthur, my son, for a few days. We haven't really worked together for the past two years because he has been off cheffing. I have also been making this bed from European oak for Stephen. I can already taste them!

Rivers Joinery: It augers well.
http://riversjoinery.blogspot.com/2015/06/i-coiled-this-old-rope-last-autumn-and.html
Wednesday, 17 June 2015. I coiled this old rope last Autumn, and hung it on the wall. I had been working on the bench below for several days, when I looked up and behold! Five wren chicks. Two days later, they fledged and were gone. My pole lathe was a staging post. Some modern joinery, produced in a workshop which may contain power tools, quarter-sawn Douglas Fir. Painted with Farrow and Ball, cooking apple oil-based paint (didn't smell like apples and not easy to get on the wood). 18 June 2015 at 17:26.
